The Department of Education was a gift from Jimmy KKKarter to the teacher's unions who helped him get elected. It began tanking the quality of education in 1980.
2) why does Trump (or you) think DOE is “bad”?
It is a colossal and useless waste of money. It doesn't educate even ONE kid. And it sends down useless mandates that drag teachers out of classes for useless meetings. (Kinda helped my substitute teaching career, since teachers were dragged out of classes and they needed my services.)
Conservative presidents since REagan (although there haven't been any) have called for the DOE to go on the chopping block. The two left wing Bushes were useless in that matter.

Yes that will make sure the people in the states that make up the Republican base stay ignorant and uneducated enough to continue voting for them.
It will ruin lives or worthless mud people but it will further entrench power of the elites, and since they are the best of us then this is a good decision.
