California Gov. Newsom calls for special legislative session after Trump win

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued a proclamation Thursday to convene a special session of the state Legislature, with the goal of preserving civil rights and enabling potential litigation ahead of the incoming Trump administration.

The special session, scheduled to begin on Dec. 2, will focus on strengthening California legal resources to safeguard fundamental rights, reproductive freedoms, climate action and immigrant families, according to the proclamation.

“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom, widely seen as a prospective Democratic candidate for the White House in 2028, said in a statement.

“California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond,” he continued. “We will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”

It's a good demonstration that if there is a will, there will be way to counteract many (not all) of the Insurrectionist-Cry-Baby-trump / Project 2025 policies that even "the base" doesn't want. There are still plenty of checks-and-balances to moderate or neutralize the reign of terror the maga-nut cronies propping up the demented one intend to unleash. The real problem is that the rest of the world will be as easily influenced as "the base" to follow along to the fake bravado.

The real challenge is the Democrats are still not prepared to confront the real problem they still have. Don't get me wrong. I was enthusiastically behind Kamala Harris and I am only just coming off the shock that she failed. But, it was clear from the outset, she was going to be a longshot. It's not that she necessarily did anything wrong; she was a good candidate and a better one than Hillary. But, she wasn't able to dive into the mood and the mindset of the majority of the country in a productive, not a dark way. So, they went with the dark fat, sweaty horse. And, I still don't think the Democrats are prepared to transition to what is obviously a new world order. And, that is a problem.

@MarkPaul

I agree. There will be someways in the states and the courts to counter some of the Trump cr@p that will be oozing out of the White House starting next year.

And, yes, Harris ran a much better campaign than Hillary.

But the Dems (and this is on the DNC and Congress and local state parties; a candidate running for president can only do so much) need to do a MUCH better job at getting support and registration in "fly-over country" and in the rural areas of the Blue Wall states and the southern swing states (NC & GA). That work needs to be done year-round in all four years of a presidential election cycle.

Schumer and Durbin have got to go! They've lost too many Senate races over the years. And there's no party discipline. There isn't a professional sports team in the country that would keep a manager or coach with the losses they've racked up.

Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema were bad recruitments and that should have been recognized from the start. They could have gotten rid of the fillibuster had the Dems had better people in those seats or had won a few others to make up for their defections.

There are also the problems that Trump will cause in foreign policy that could have ramifications for decades.

@beckyromero And, I agree. The Democrats need to muster the same cold-hearted determination that they used to unceremoniously dump Biden, but hopefully without the public display of "we're just having a family discussion for all to see and hear." Neutralizing Old-Man-Insurrectionist-Cry-Baby-trump is going to require nimble and subtle skills that seems to be missing right now. Meanwhile, the Democrats need to improve their message and delivery that captures the imagination of more of the voting public that ended feeling a fat slob of a cry-baby with vile rhetoric was the lesser of 2 evils.
He should convince the state legislature to secede from the US.
California is the 4th or 5th largest economy in the world, and they don't need to US to survive and prosper.

I for one am tired of my federal tax dollars going to the unproductive, red states who can't seem to make it on their own.

And here is why America is doomed.. Even when the President (no matter how wrong he is) has the White House, Congress and the Senate he cant sontrol the State, short of a Civil War. And California and a couple of others can win that..😷

@MarmeeMarch I have no doubt my Pixel 8 owes its origins to America. But how many are still made inn the US now? For that matter, how many Nike Shoes or Harley Davidsons? You are being sidelined and out competed..😷

@MarmeeMarch The fact is, America is no longer making money out of those things. The Japanese borrowed US ideas and went glodal with them. And now thwe Chinese are doing it. And America is now a customer, not a maker..😷
Don’t think he even play well in his home state.

He was recalled, but survived that.
@beckyromero I know. Not sure how.

Newsome is a rising star in the [i] Democratic Party. He's about to make a move. Remember you heard it here first. ☺

@Zonuss

What will Muslims in Michigan think of him?

Think he will do better than Harris?
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@beckyromero Yes. Because he will play the role of the uniter just like Obama.
He has the charisma and charm that will play to the emotions of the vulnerable after the turmoil of Trump.

@Zonuss

Perhaps.

But there will be millions of dollars of ads about the French Laundry visit.

I think Harris is the best choice. And she'll have a tremendous advantage with volunteers that won't easily abandon her.
