Wonder how many American republicans know

That republicanism started as a leftist ideology thanks to the french revolution
Hmm. I think the idea of republicanism goes back to Ancient Rome.
Machiavelli, in The Prince, often seemed to prefer the idea of a republican state.
And the writers of the US constitution overtly declared that they admired Machiavelli's advice on Republican statecraft. The constitution leaves lots of room for Machiavellian tactics by the most powerful, and insufficient means to block or limit them.
At the moment, if American Republicans know just about anything, they're likely afraid to mention it for fear of contradicting Herr Trump.

Now, having said that, this little factoid could be spun for Trumpist taste, by, for example linking it to the Guillotine and executions.

Still, it's probably safer to let Trump think it's his idea.

@Burnley123 ah yes, my old friend Jac Bobin! Alas poor Jac!
First republics were Phoenician in the west. In India it was Vaijjian Confederacy. I'm uncertain which is older because we have terrible dating for Phoenician sites.

Rome got the concept from Carthage (a Punic/Phoenician people living in Tunesia), Corinth, Estruscans, Magna Graecia (Southern Italy).
They love that bull shift. They ain't going make no sense of modern politics - y'all loves you some slaver confusion. Lolz.

The same revolution that gave Europe Napoleon, 15 years of warfare, a splendid beef dish, and a delightful pastry.
