MAGA and what it means

Make America Great Again

This is not asked in order to jeer, really I wondered exactly what section to post this in.

But I'm asking :- WHEN was America GREAT?

I'd like to know just what those in MAGA hats see as "greatness", what age are we talking about.

(I'm in the UK and often those who voted for Brexit seemed to have some sort of idea of a golden age in the past that was lost, and needed to be regained. The days of Empire! The spirit of the blitz!)

Was it when "men were men"? An age when someone born the very lowest could yet reach the very highest? Do we go back to the Wild West?

I read once a biography of Harry Truman. I was greatly impressed by the man. Maybe others would not agree.

Well, I'm rambling a bit, but my question remains - and I have genuine interest. Not looking for disputes and mud slinging.

Just asking. When exactly was America great, and of what did such greatness consist?

Thanks

It was a hell of a lot better 4 years ago ,when people could still think for themselves and not be🐑 following their leader off the cliff.
@kodiac following dear leader off the cliff has certainly become more extreme in the last four years. Storming the Capitol, taking it for granted that immigrants eat cats and dogs. But it happened longer than four years ago too. Fighting COVID with horse dewormer, shooting at hurricanes when Trump dropped his plan to nuke them.

@NerdyPotato Yeah back when people could afford to drive to the grocery store and actually have enough money left to buy food. People didn't have to stand in line behind illegals with 4 carts pilled high with top shelf food paid for by the very same people waiting in line for their two small bages of bare necessity food for 60.00. When.you could afford a hotel room, but even if you could no rooms available because your sanctuary city is letting illegals stay for free while homeless veterans die on the streets. I could go on but hey welcome to biden and kamalas America
@kodiac thankfully none of that is happening.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@NerdyPotato oh really? Where do you live?
Spotpot · 46-50, M
@kodiac The economy was in freefal at the end of Trumps presidecy thats why inflation was so low or falling.
@kodiac the Netherlands. Why? Also, your comment was about following leaders off the cliff, not leaders making decisions you disagree with.
@kodiac 22 MILLION jobs lost during Trump's final year. Grocery shelves empty, people using coffee filters for toilet paper.

Reason10 · 70-79, M
@Spotpot WRONG. The economy was recovering from the OBAMA virus. It was Unelected Joe's TRILLIONS in welfare spending that brought in inflation. You do not know the meaning of the word inflation or how it is caused.
Inflation means too many dollars chasing too few goods.

Unelected Joe inherited a BOOMING ECONOMY compared to what his policies eroded it to.
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues Those jobs were not lost. LIBERAL BLUE STATE GOVERNORS (like Tampon Tim) caused businesses to close. And Unelected Joe made it worse. Joe's policies did NOT bring in new jobs from the Far East like Trump's corporate tax cuts did.
@Reason10 says
hose jobs were not lost. LIBERAL BLUE STATE GOVERNORS (like Tampon Tim) caused businesses to close.
DEAD WRONG!! As usual!!

Let's look at solidly red state; how about Florida??
Gosh, same job loss rate as the rest of the US. Dude, why do you bother lying here on the internet where everyone can check your claims and prove them false??

@NerdyPotato So how do you know anything about life in America? From what you see on the news?🐑

@kodiac I have this thing called the internet. It offers a lot of sources beyond the news. You should check it some time. That way you don't have to rely only on what the Trump campaign says.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@NerdyPotato I'm living it you're not end of story
@kodiac in what universe are you living where illegals get money from the government? Immigrants in the process of approval may get some assistance, but certainly not enough for "4 carts pilled high with top shelf food", and illegals get nothing at all.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@NerdyPotato Dude what universe are you in . They get debit cards they get medical cards they get housing . A small price for the demoncrats to pay for votes. You seriously think you can tell me what's happening in my country when your a world away.? Better find a real news source because you really don't have a clue.
@kodiac that sounds like what's offered to refugees, not people that escaped border control. 🤷
kodiac · 22-25, M
@NerdyPotato Wrong they don't have to escape anything they just walk in . You can't escape if you're not detained . You believe 10 million people escaped from border patrol?
@kodiac Not illegals dude. The people who get those are LEGAL asylum seekers.

Not only are they here legally, many of them were admitted by the Trump admin. Refugees from Haiti had Temporary Protected Status for most of the Trump admin.

And according to the WSJ, in Springfield,
...This recent wave of Haitian immigrants was initially welcomed. The town’s fortunes had declined alongside those of the rest of the Rust Belt, with the population dropping from 83,000 in 1960 to 59,000 in 2020. The pandemic created a crunch in the available labor force as many workers stayed home out of choice or necessity, collecting stimulus checks.

... The local economy boomed. Business owners said they were grateful to have workers eager to work long shifts and do what it took to meet production goals. New subdivisions sprung up in the cornfields outside town. New restaurants opened. The Haitian flag flew at City Hall.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@kodiac Sorry, dude, facts don't care about your feelings. Those migrants are legally here legally seeking asylum according to the immigration laws passed in 1986 and signed by Reagan.

Yeah, those laws are ANCIENT and in desperate need of updating; the asylum process amounts to a giant loophole, where people can request asylum, and the asylum decision process is terribly slow. We had a good bipartisan Senate bill - first immigration reform since Reagan - to greatly speed up the asylum decisions and close the loophole. You know what happened.
GOP senators seethe as Trump blows up delicate immigration compromise
https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/25/politics/gop-senators-angry-trump-immigration-deal/index.html

WHY is there a loophole?

Because, for decades, since our last immigration reform during the Reagan era, US immigration law and policy was designed to spit in the eye of Fidel Castro by treating everyone who set foot on Florida as an asylum seeker. This helped earn votes from a swing demographic in a swing state. And you know Reagan was a YUGE fan of immigration, right?

@kodiac do you have anything so say about the facts or are you just going to repeat you're a sheep? Because that's pretty obvious by now without posting that emoji over and over.

@kodiac Hi there, one of the "sheep" has now blocked you.
