Kamala Harris Vows to End College Degree Requirements for Some Federal Jobs.

"As president, I will get rid of the unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs to increase jobs for folks without a four-year degree," said Harris on Friday in a speech in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

More than 62% of Americans age 25 or older did not hold a bachelor's degree, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in early 2023. Americans without college degrees made up three out of five voters in 2020.

The Democratic presidential candidate said on Friday the U.S. should recognize the value of paths to success beyond a college degree, like apprenticeships and technical programs.

A degree does not necessarily indicate a person's skills, Harris said. She added: "And I will challenge the private sector to do the same."

It's a really good idea. Most civil service (central government) departments in the UK have entry points for everyone with basic school leavers' grades upwards. They then have the opportunity to work towards professional grades through apprenticeships, which can be far more attractive to people from working class backgrounds who may be discouraged by cost from attending university full time. Jobs which are supported by the taxpayer should reflect society as widely as possible.

Good luck with the private sector though . . our corporations do not have a good record of investment in training and education.

I have no idea why you would need a college degree to work in a government job.
