Ex-Biden Official Sam Brinton Allegedly Part of Multiple Luggage Theft Scandals Avoids Jail Time With Sweetheart Deal
Non-binary ex-Biden administration nuclear official Sam Brinton who was charged with felony suitcase theft pleaded guilty to petit larceny in a plea deal that spares him jail time.
The Washington Free Beacon reported the plea deal emerged quietly during a hearing last week in Arlington, Virginia, General District Court.
It allows Brinton to escape jail time in a case that could have resulted in decades of imprisonment.
Brinton agreed to an adult diversion program as part of the plea deal.
He will undergo a mental-health evaluation, write a letter of apology, return any stolen property and complete 50 hours of community service assisting the elderly.
Prosecutors noted that the arrangement also reduced Brinton’s grand-larceny felony charges to petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
“The resolution we came to is supported by the facts and circumstances of the case as a whole,” said a spokeswoman for Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti.
The former Biden official uses “they/them” pronouns and made headlines after he was dismissed following multiple jaw-dropping luggage-theft scandals.
Brinton faced grand larceny charges back in February 2023 for allegedly taking Tanzanian designer Asya Khamsin’s luggage from Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington; an incident that marked Brinton’s third alleged luggage theft attempt.
Brinton spent about two weeks in a Virginia jail related to the Khamsin theft. He was then released on bond.
Brinton also settled with Khamsin in a related civil case filed in Montgomery County, Maryland, this week.
A stipulated dismissal of the lawsuit is expected later this week, per the Beacon.
