When your political heroes take a crazy turn...

Glenn Greenwals has done so much excellent journalism and is an icon for the left but he's morphed into a Trump apologist.

I've just seen a liong debate he had with Destiny on the January the 6th and Greenwald was adamantly defending the idea that it wasn't an insurrection. Why? And also, it's bollocks. Also, giving it back to the libs doesn't count as speaking the truth to power when you are being an apologist for the far right.

It's like your favourite indie band produces a synth pop album with shit lyrics and tells the world that they don't get how cool and edgy they are.

Pfffff.

I saw that...

Glenn's point was that the temporary delay of a ceremonial duty for several hours due to a riot is not a coup, nor an insurrection. He then makes several anecdotal examples of what he believes would be a true coup or insurrection. Nothing was threatened and nobody ever believed that these people would be able to stop the transfer of power. It ended in 3 hours, and the ceremony completed, Biden was seated as President and Trump left peacefully. These are not the actions of someone engaging in insurrection.

Destiny's seemed to be that since they believed the intent was to delay the certification and possibly have Pence throw out the electors, that intent meant they engaged in an insurrection.

I didn't agree with his point that since the Whiskey Rebellion was an insurrection so should the January 6th riots be considered an insurrection.

He's been a shill for Putin for a long time. So no surprise that this is the next step in the evolution. His latest is pushing Tucker Carlson as a serious journalist. 😂
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@luckranger71 The SW equivalent would be like me telling everyone that Dippy Joe was awesome.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@Burnley123 😂 Correct. Or many of the usual suspects, some of whom have shown up here.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@luckranger71 He is a real journalist, just because you don't like what he reports on doesn't take away his journalistic bona fides.

Hard to believe anyone who socialized with Noam Chomsky and Amy Goodman, would ever entertain appearing on the tuKKKer Carlson show, much less become a regular. WTF?
Northwest · M
@Burnley123 He was part of the early resistance against the Bush post 9/11 trampling on civil rights.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest I didn't know that but cam believe it. I started reading him in the Guardian during the Snowdon and Wikileaks era. I've read a lot of his work for the Intercept.
.

The importance of his work, his courage and depth of analysis have all been outstanding. I cringe watching him speak now.

He's too intelligent to do a Russell Brand. But he isn't!

@Burnley123
I didn't know that but cam believe it.
This is how he started out professionally, as an attorney.

Oh no, how dare people think independently and change their mind. You have to stay in the same two teams that divide the population.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Always a hero until something is reported you don't want to hear.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Virgo79 Yep. It's not that the person had a change of heart, they've been indoctrinated or captured and are seen as one of the fallen instead of someone who no longer shares EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR BELIEFS.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Greenwald went completely off the fucking deep end. God what a weird heel turn.
Yeah, Greenwald is one of the many grifters who used to grift on the Left, but eventually realized there is way more money on the Right, since that's the side funded by billionaires. Same thing happened with Tim Pool and Jimmy Dore.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@BohemianBoo Pool is a grifter. Dore is a moron.

Greenwald is a combative contrarianism who has taken his (understandable) animosity to mainstream liberalism off in the wrong direction.

@BohemianBoo does the name george soros ring a bell?

For those calling Greenwald a grifter and a Putin stooge as a reason for his change, I don't quite agree. This article has a long and deep dive analysis, if you have the time.

@Burnley123 Confirmation bias.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SumKindaMunster I have a confirmation bias towards the truth.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Burnley123 I just have to note the immature and childish way in which you dismiss those that you no longer agree with. It's interesting you supported Glenn Greenwald when he was reporting on things you agreed with, now that he is not, he is no longer worthy of your consideration or respect.

Again, you could just let it just be a difference of opinions but I am noting the dismissal in your tone and words.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Sure is amusing when the left eats it's own
Ynotisay · M
I'm not sure if journalism was really ever his lane. But there's no doubt, in my mind at least, that he's acting on behalf of others. A certain country that begins with "R" comes to mind.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Ynotisay · M
@Burnley123 Glenn Greenwald is a con artist.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Ynotisay I actually don't think he is I've followed his work for a long time. It's the case of contrarianism leading him to the wrong conclusions
Dshhh · M
follow the money trail
what entity does he work for? has that changed since then?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Dshhh I don't think it's about the money.
Dshhh · M
@Burnley123 it is nearly ALWAYS about the money
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Dshhh As a grand narrative yes but rebel contrarians sometimes like attention.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
I guess Glenn didn't get the notice that deviating from group think is unacceptable.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@eli1601 He's never ever done groupthink. Then or now.

It's more that contrarianism leading him to jump over the centre.
So you insist we vote blue and I accept that about you. Glenn is a traitor to liberals from the party of labour as well.
LeftWingProgressive · 22-25, T
theres something very offensive about this
Human1000 · M
Extreme is drawn to extreme. Center left doesn’t have this problem. 😏

Russel Brand, for example. Gotta “swing for the fences.” Americanism, saying derived from Baseball. Self-explanatory…
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Human1000 Given that I've never had a problem, I must be centre left.
