House Democrats vote against deporting illegals convicted of drunk driving
"The majority of House Democrats voted against a bill that would mandate the deportation of illegal aliens and other noncitizens convicted of driving while drunk or impaired.
The bill was approved on Thursday with some 274 votes, 215 of which came from Republicans, yet was opposed by 150 votes, all of which came from Democrats. The legislation would bar the convicted individual in question from admission into the United States, in addition to serving as grounds for the required deportation of the individual.
Various Democrats defended their votes against the bill. Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, said in a statement that her colleagues chose to “waste our time inciting racism that puts our immigrant neighbors at risk and makes our communities less safe.” Representative Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York, said in a floor speech that “improving access to public transportation” should have been offered as an alternative to drunk driving."
