Anyone whose family has lived in America for generations is part black so that makes no sense. I am mostly Polish and English so who is going to pay me for what my people went through?
CorvusBlackthorne · 100+, M
@DIABLISS I wouldd start by asking the German government.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS We've paid reparations to every major group insured or affected by the US government. All but blacks. Japanese, Hawaiians, Native Americans...everyone but the people who built this nation with forced labor.

And no, not everyone in the US has some diluted form of back ancestry. That simply isn't true.
Ynotisay · M
@Graylight There's countless examples of settlements, investments and legislation that is only focused on black Americans. I might be a little more concerned about things like affirmative action than paying money for something that happened 200 years ago. Hell, we got very close to banning interracial marriage recently. What does that say?
Here's what won't happen with reparations. The wealth gap will not be impacted in ANY way. Zero. But here's what will happen. Greater racial divide and supporting the nonsense that black people aren't capable. That's outside of the logistics of who would receive reparations. Do wealthy blacks receive the same as poor blacks? Do you have to show proof that a relative was enslaved? What about mixed race people?
And you probably know that Japanese-Americans who were personally interred received reparations long after the fact. They deserved it. They were Americans who were arrested and imprisoned. And as far as Native American slaves? A big percentage of them were enslaved by other tribes. The Hawaiians had no role in "building" America. Indentured servants from Europe are another story. They made up about half of those arriving to the colonies. They got a boat ride and spent their lives in toil.
Money will never erase the past. But investments in communities and individuals, and people taking advantage of them, can change the future. So, for me, it comes down to either wanting to impotently respond to the past or pro-actively focus on the now and the future. Easy call for me.

@Ynotisay Whatever measures have been put into place aren't enough to counter for the institutional racism that fomented over decades. That’s on white people and it’s actually a measurable, quantifiable problem.

What’s interesting is that we pay restitution all the time. Nearly 75 times in the last decades. Just not to blacks. And the general public seems to be okay with reparations…unless it’s about black people. Maybe we should be asking ourselves why that is.

The reparations themselves aren’t at heart here. It’s the reluctance of the offenders to course correct for an abominable history.
@Graylight everything you wrote is a lie. no one actually got reparations for crap. giving someone who is living below the the poverty level a casino and calling it an "Indian casino" to boot is just putting a band aid on a broken leg and saying "there there...all better?"
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS Is that seriously what you think happened? Please learn the material before opening your mouth. You might not agree with reality, but reality still happened.

And here are some facts: In 1949, Congress set aside $1.4 billion as reparations to Native Americans. The US federal budget sets aside $4.5 billion for the Department of the Interior's Tribal programs in 2021.

And casinos aren’t “reparations” for anything. This is a complex area of law, but it has to do with land rights, deed owners and self-regulating government. Even so, I’d rather have casinos providing free education, health care, housing and economic-development aid to the indigenous people than have them on welfare.

Reparations are made all the time. To peoples, to tribes, to participants, to races to cultures. But not to black people. Tell me, is it that you’d deny someone what others deem them worthy of or is it that someone’s getting something you’re not?

I very much doubt you will be able to reach @DIABLISS with logic and reason, since it is quite clear that logic and reason did not help @DIABLISS to reach her current conclusion.

@Graylight
pianoplayingsteve · 31-35, M
@DIABLISS when will you pay for the poles killing ethnic german minorities, which was the catalyst for WW2?
@Graylight Those funds were collected and done with what ever the hell some old white crusty republican politicians thought should be done with it. and yes, Indian casinos were suppose to be for *wink wink* reparations. But in fact we have never helped or given real reparations to the people who actually should own this land. We murdered them, starved them and destroyed them. We kept them from owning anything...getting a real education and we certainly kept them in their ghetto situations and that is all over America. i don't know what fantasy land you are living in but it is not America.

And you are correct that Black people are not given any reparations either. That is what this country is built on...warring, stealing, kidnapping, raping, the extinction of animals, pollution, gun violence, owning other human beings, child abuse...if it wasn't for all these things, there would be no America (not the one we have now at least)
@CorvusBlackthorne you are a sad person who knows nothing about me
@pianoplayingsteve Germany invading Poland kicked off WWII. that was when it became a world war, idiot. And i just spent an hour trying to find anything that talks about what Poland did to Germany....there was nothing...UNTIL THE END OF WWII!
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS The US waited a full two years+ to engage in WWII. We wanted nothing to do with the conflict, so that's not when WWII started for us.
@Graylight i never said the US anything. a war is a war whether or not the USA is involved or not. Arrogant much? I hate when someone calls The Vietnam war a police action. It was a war to them so it is the Vietnam war. and i was responding to the ridiculous notion that the Polish had to do with starting WWII. When THEY were invaded that is when WWII became a World war. Don't you and Corvus know anything about history? Or do you just read Republican propaganda pamphlets? Or listen to Trump?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS It's not arrogant to discuss one's own viewpoint as an anchor point, particularly on the US site, so get over yourself.

Not a Republican, Einstein. Not a conservative. And if you think WWII can be clarified in a social media post, you're the one who should do some reflection.
@Graylight no it is arrogant to always think that your country is involved in every discussion. we weren't discussing America getting involved in WWII. We were discussing Poland's involvement in WWii. your info is backwards and your previous answer doesn't even address what we were speaking about. POLAND !!!
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS You don't know what my info regarding Poland is, so don't tell me whether it's right or wrong.

Also, learns the caps key. You shout and whisper at an alarmingly frantic pace.
You’re the one who said every citizen in America is part black. You’re the one who think casinos are some kind of reparation payment to Native Americans. You’re the one who said WWII was kicked off and the later the world war began.
Germany invading Poland kicked off WWII. that was when it became a world war, idiot.

You’re the one who knows not of what she speaks.
@Graylight i don't do anything frantically. i think you need to re-read what was written here and i don't think you are having the same conversation that i am having. your answers don't match the conversation at all. i have blocked you before for being aggressive and seemingly wasted. i won't do that again because i have learned that most people come on here to mess with folks. and post pandemic, weak people like yourself have gone completely insane so i can't have a conversation with you about anything. You are probably pro-life and against sex education. you were probably excited when your comrades invaded the capital on January 6. and you probably sat at home and cried during the pandemic...for three years.

Myself? i am pro-woman. if a woman needs an abortion, she should be able to get one. If a child is in school, it should get a lot of sex education. our educational system is appalling. if you did any damage inside or out to the capital building or chanted "Kill Pence!" you should do time.

And no one deserves reparations because of something that happened to your ancestors. If something happened to your parent or guardian and it effects you personally...then sure.

And you know nothing about WWII or Poland or Nazi's or Hitler or anything that is going on that mirrors those situations. read a book for goodness sakes.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS Not aggressive - read my history. Not wasted - don't drink. Still not a conservative - but you know that. I worked because it was mandated and necessary during Covid - personal suffering doesn't stop because of a virus.

The whole point or reparations is that the effects of the original wrong are so deleterious as to still be effecting descendants. Which racism and slavery have done over the centuries. Which you refuse to look at because you would prefer it not be a real thing.

You and I share stances a many things, it seems, but not on this. I'm interested in how you so thoroughly understand my concept of history. How could you know my education history? How could you know of my own deeply German history and family tapestry from that era? How could you know my 83-year-old brother in law is Polish and can explain concepts to you you’ve not even heard of?

Oh, but you saw a documentary or took a course, right? So you’ve got this down.
@Graylight i haven't heard the word "deleterious" since the last time i saw "singin' in the rain".

I am half Polish

i read history books for fun.

i used to watch documentaries for fun...but they became redundant.

i do not believe in reparations. i think people need to stop being so prejudicial about every single thing. then we wouldn't have these stupid discussions about things that really don't effect us because no one is going to ever pay the money out.

i just simply hate people who go to my thread and take up the antagonistic side just to be trolls. you waste my time and take up space...and bore me
Graylight · 51-55, F
@DIABLISS Oh, see, and I was ready to say we have more in common that not and on this one topic we disagree but debate is never bad if it opens up other perspectives.

And then your last. I have been here very long; watch the claims you levy against me. I would suggest you block me or get ready.
Ynotisay · M
@DIABLISS A "troll" is someone who purposefully lies and provokes for their own amusement. That's not the same thing as having a different opinion.
@Ynotisay ...and? i stand by my statement
Ynotisay · M
@DIABLISS OK. Then I'll assume you're a troll.
@Ynotisay and i assume you are unintelligent
Ynotisay · M
@DIABLISS Nope. Not to be arrogant but I consider myself to be pretty bright. All that high-falutin' education and stuff. I mean, I took the time to explain what a "troll" was to you, right? So if I'm unintelligent what does that make you?
There's no need to take things personally. If you're leaving a comment online then you're opening yourself up to contradictory perspectives. It comes with the territory. So if you can't handle the drumsticks - don't play in the band.
