Is it ethical for a vegan to own a cat as a pet since these animals require meat to live?

Nope total gotcha moment. All veganism is invalid. You win!
@CountScrofula

I don't think veganism is invalid at all. I think it is the ethically superior choice for anyone with the means to act on it.
This is a legitimate topic of discussion and you're welcome to participate more thoughtfully if you wish.

@Pikachu Alright thought this was a bad faith argument, apologies.

I think general consensus is that keeping pets isn't without ethical consideration, but we live in a reality with a huge population of cats and it's better to just keep them and give them good lives. The other option is releasing/euthanizing and neither is good for anyone.
@Pikachu I appreciate that you added "with the means to act on it" because that's not the case for everyone.
@CountScrofula

No worries.

We do have a ton of cats but does that mean it's ethically sound for someone who thinks it's wrong to participate in the killing of animals to choose to participate in that system by owning a cat?
@NerdyPotato

I think that that part is crucial.

@Pikachu I think this varies wildly by the vegan. I mean, some won't eat honey. Others are vegans purely for personal health. Many for ethical reasons but just kind of accept that since cats are carnivores and permanently associated with humans, may as well just deal with it and also cats are awesome.

There's no clean answer it's a lot of things.
@CountScrofula

Cats are awesome. But so is the taste of a well cooked steak.
