Is it ethical for a vegan to own a cat as a pet since these animals require meat to live?

I think it is animal abuse to not provide your cat or dog with meat.

An individual can make whatever choice they wish for themselves but not for their pet.

I agree with that entirely. But since owning a cat requires a person to contribute to the animal suffering they consider to be unethical how can they in good conscience own a cat?

@InOtterWords Cats can be healthy on a vegan diet, although it's more complicated than with a more standard omnivorous diet. There's relatively little research on the subject.

I'm sympathetic towards people who feed their cats meat; hell, my parents do it. But I don't think it makes sense to leave the decision to the cats, since the cats do not and cannot know the moral implications of the food that they're eating.
@BlueVeins put a plate of meat out and a vegan meal out which would the cat choose?

@InOtterWords An uninformed choice is not a choice. I'm sure you wouldn't be in favor of someone chaining up a human and letting a komodo dragon choose between them and a head of lettuce in the same way.
@BlueVeins and would you be able to stop a cat from catching its own dinner

@BlueVeins my cat often goes out and catches a mouse or a bird. I cannot force him to be vegan
