Rep. Jim Jordan criticized online after saying 'only Americans should vote in American elections'

Republican’s tweet concerned House Joint Resolution 24, which overturns a D.C. bill allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections

Rep. Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, caused a stir on Twitter Friday night after he said Democrats in Washington, D.C., were "ridiculous" to support a decision allowing non-citizens the opportunity to vote.

"Only Americans should vote in American elections," said Jordan, prompting backlash.

The Republican’s tweet concerned House Joint Resolution 24, or the "Disapproving the action of the District of Columbia Council in approving the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022," which passed the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The resolution seeks to overturn a bill that passed the D.C. Council in October, which opened the local voting process to immigrants.

Do Americans get to vote in other country’s elections? If not maybe they shouldn’t vote in ours either.

@cherokeepatti If they had dual citizenship they would be able to vote in all elections not just local ones. You don't need to be a citizen to vote in local elections. I don't know how many American's are permanent residents but about 300 were granted resident status last year, along with about a thousand Britons, and about nine and a half thousand from about 90 other nations. 761 Americans were granted Norwegian citizenship last year.

All of these people will be able to vote in elections for local government in the towns where they live.

@Budwick You asked "How is this even a question" and I provided a reason why it can be question, sounds right on topic to me. If you don't want answers don't ask questions.

It’s another tool for the Democrats to rig elections. The candy ass Republicans won’t say a thing because they don’t want to be called racist.

@bgjb58 Exactly.
I agree with Jordan.

This is why the borders are open. They want the illegals to vote democrat. If they do, the goodies will keep flowing. Watch....this illegals voting is going to become a huge issue as the left begins whining and the media supports the idea.

I know, right? However, this is a new woke thing. For example, if illegals live in a city and their children attend school there, they are allowed to vote for school board members and so on. I don't know how far it goes...or how far up the election chain they have been allowed to creep.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@4meAndyou They're illegal.
They are not allowed to creep 'the election chain' at all.
it was just non-citizens wasnt it?
i could have voted in the next election if the commies got their way 🇦🇺
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Why shouldn't it be a question? I'm not a Norwegian citizen but I am a permanent resident and can vote in local elections where I live. It's perfectly reasonable to argue against it but it is also something that is done in some other countries and is regarded as completely uncontroversial.

And of course illegal immigrants can't vote.

@ninalanyon
And of course illegal immigrants can't vote.
That's the point of the post.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Budwick Did the D.C. Bill allow illegal immigrants to vote?
Budwick · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon Blue cities and states let anyone vote - even dead people!
Local control is not likely, anyway. You can simply decide how many foreign Visa's and green cards a place should have to snuff what you missed -. Of democracy.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
are there any other democracies which allow non-citizens to vote in their elections?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@SusanInFlorida Of course. Norway is one and I think other Scandinavian countries. Non-citizen permanent residents can vote in local elections. Legal residents can vote in local elections in the UK, the details vary from country to country (Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland)
