He would be a Republican, but would be far too moderate to have a national future as a Republican.
OggggO · 36-40, M
@windinhishair The irony being, of course, that he bears a significant share of the blame for the party's current extremism.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@OggggO Indeed. It went way beyond anything Reagan could have imagined.

Reagan did more than anybody since FDR to shore up Social Security for the next several decades. Reagan would have been adamantly anti-Putin and pro Ukraine. Reagan would have despised Trump's immorality, corruption, hypocrisy. Reagan surrounded himself with experts and was never afraid to take advice. Trump surrounded himself with yes-men and tried to use policy to prove the experts wrong. Reagan took responsibility for his mistakes; Trump would say anything to avoid blame. Reagan wouldn't leave today's republican party, but he would have no national future in it.

"3) Reagan was well known to work well with a Democrat congress."

Most Democrats of 40 years ago weren't batsh*t crazy, as too many Democrats are today.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Thinkerbell not talking about the democrats the topic is regan and the republicans
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@smiler2012

Reagan worked well with Democrats because the Democrats of his time were much more sensible than they are now.

Reagan would surely not have worked well with today's sorry crop of Democrats.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
You're understanding of Reagan and what it means to be a "RINO" are sorely lacking and childishly simplistic.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Well, he DID start out as a registered Democrat, New Deal supporter, and FDR fan. Then when he was the spokesman for General Electric he switched opinions for some reason and switched to the GOP in 1962.

Republicans are not against immigration. Republicans are against illegal immigration.
That one word you purposefully omitted makes all the difference . Like saying woman, or trans woman.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@trollslayer] well to be fair times where different tensions between russia and america in the time reagan was in office .under the same scenario in ukraine would of reagan followed the current republican thinking and looked the other way . reagan had right wing conservative thinking as republicans but the trump and m. a.g.a have gone beyond this

He was a bad man then and he'd be a bad man now.

The liberals weren't such asswipes then
ron122 · 41-45, M
Yes, he would be a Republican and the left-wing nut cases would be trashing him. That's all they know.
Reagan was on the path & arc of how Republicans went from reasonable to unhinged, but he wouldn't recognize this GOP as his, I think.

I bet he'd lose his trademark smile interacting with the..."Freedom Caucus"...
Yes. Reagan was staunchly anti social, anti progress and anti government for the many.
Spotpot · 41-45, M
What was his view on immigrants.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Spotpot
President Ronald Reagan did not make immigration a major focus of his administration. However, he came to support the package of reforms sponsored by Simpson and Mazzoli and signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act into law in November 1986. Upon signing the act at a ceremony held beside the newly-refurbished Statue of Liberty, Reagan said, "The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become Americans."

The act required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status and made it illegal to hire or recruit unauthorized immigrants knowingly. The act also legalized certain seasonal agricultural undocumented migrants and undocumented migrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously without the penalty of a fine, back taxes due, and admission of guilt. Candidates were required to prove that they were not guilty of any crime, had been in the country before January 1, 1982, and possessed at least a minimal knowledge about U.S. history and government and the English language.

The law established financial and other penalties for those employing undocumented migrants, under the theory that low prospects for employment would reduce undocumented migration. Regulations promulgated under the Act introduced the I-9 form to ensure that all employees presented documentary proof of their legal eligibility to accept employment in the United States.

By splitting the H-2 visa category created by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, the 1986 law created the H-2A visa and H-2B visa categories, for temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers, respectively.

For this and other positions, Reagan today would be attacked as an ultra-liberal and would not be able to run as a Republican.
