Wait . . what? It's NOT Britain and France? It's Turkey trolling Greece? Two entirely different NATO members? Well . . . this changes everything. Nobody cares what bull$hit nations like Turkey say, right?

Actually, we SHOULD care. Turkey is a pariah among NATO members. Both Turkey and Greece were admitted to NATO 70 years ago, and have been bitch-slapping each other ever since. Turkey, you may recall, has been upping the ante recently by purchasing Russian weapons (good luck – they aren't working against Ukraine). WTF, though!!! How can you be a member of a defense pact whose STATED MISSION is deterrence of Russia, and be paying Putin billions for weapons incompatible with other NATO members?

I put this squarely on 'President Tayyip Erdogan”, who has been some combination of prime minister and/or president of Turkey since 2003. He not only fully embraces Russia, he's trying to implement an Islamic state (complete with scarf police); wipe out the Kurds. Boost Palestinian terrorists. Abduction and assassination attempts on Turkish expats living in the USA. And now . .. threatening a first strike against Greece?

Everyone wants to go to Greece at some point. Athens. The Parthenon. Those idyllic Mediterranean islands. Few rational people have a second honeymoon in Istanbul on their bucket list.

President Erdogan's stated reason for building ICBMs capable of reaching Athens? The Greek government “has too many troops in areas close to the Turkish border”. Yep – he actually said that. Remember, we're talking two NATO nations here. And countries about the size of Ohio.

Personally, I don't see either of them being worth much in the event NATO ever has to go into combat. In fact, Turkish leaks of confidential NATO documents are probably the reason why Putin “knew” that NATO would not defend Ukraine.

Kick Turkey out of NATO, President Biden. Don't convene a committee . . . you ARE the committee. Stop dicking around with WNBA basketball players and Musk-snarking. Turkey is a dictatorship and adds zero value to NATO.

Go see the film “Midnight Express” in case you missed it the first time around. These are our effing ALLIES? Get real . . .

We should probably get our nuclear weapons out of incirlik before we start fucking with Erdogan ..

@Onestarlitnight best reply of the thread. in the age of ICBMs and supersonic stealth bombers they serve no practical or strategic purpose there. They are simply an 'attractive nuisance"

'Kick Turkey out of NATO, President Biden.'

And how do you suggest he does that , considering that there isn't even a provision in the treaty to suspend membership rights, let alone expel an ally.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow true, however iraq was not a nato mission.

Afghanistan was and Canadian troops fought and died because america was attacked on 911 ..all the while trump was attacking and insulting Nato members while limbs were being blown off. Did he thank any Nato members even once for their sacrifice? Nope.
@Ryderbike Even Afghanistan was a pointless and totally unnecessary war. It only happened because Bush wanted to look macho in the press and the polls.

Personally I think NATO should have been tossed on the scrap heap of history with the Warsaw Pact but that is another matter.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow There were two world wars in the 20th century. There have been no world wars since NATO was formed.

That doesn’t mean it’s perfect but the alternative is unthinkable
Turkey is merely one of a few NATO member states that prove the moral high ground claims of the organization are a steaming pile of bullshit and has been for decades.

And Turkey is the second largest army in NATO fyi.

As for their use of Russian equipment. The failures in Ukraine are more to do with lack of training trying to use a conscript army for conquest something conscript armies have never been intended for going back to the roman legions.

In fact professional armies were invented specifically for conquest and for defeating conscript armies that are defensive if the people at the top have any idea what they are doing.

The biggest problem with Russia's military is people are in charge because of connections and being willing to tell the leader what they want to hear. More like a medieval or renaissance era military were commissions were determined by nobility, not competence.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow wait a minute. your profile says your a canadian socialist? that explains why you can't marshall ANY facts for your "arguments", lol. Stop stalking me. You're already blocked by a lot of other people.
@SusanInFlorida And of course your only recourse is to scream and whine about foreigners like a right wing cliche.

And I am not the one with a fact problem. Like every Trumper you have just made shit up.
Heck you can't even get one of the most famous quotes in history correct.
@SusanInFlorida And I know alot of right wing extremists are snowflakes. How is that my fault they are afraid of anything that doesn't parrot their bullshit?
He is continually breaching article 5 ,even the UN has stated their support for Greece amongst other european countries ,the continually evades aerospace that is not his ,i am talking about hundreds of breaches daily ,and yes he was given weapons from Russia ,he sent hundreds of immigrants to europe during the start of the pandemic and lockdowns ,especially greece who is economically vulnerable and unrest is high, using them as peons to further weaken both greece and western relations ,even if it puts their lives on risk, do not forget about the attempted coup from his military towards him and his regime in 2016 or the lira crisis turkey is experiencing while he continues to enjoy his laundered wealth .
@PepsiColaP
Its my belief that the US intervened to stop the coup.. and it was a mistake..
Coup leaders were minutes away from shooting down his jet but they were told to stand down..
Another mistake we've been forced to live with ever since..
At the time, elements of the Turkish army had nearly surrounded Incirlik air base.. whether they were loyalists or part of the coup hasn't been disclosed.
Threats against our nuclear stockpile there may have influenced us to withdraw support for the coup attempt.

@SusanInFlorida hyperbole, I know, but while Greeks have existed as a people for 3000 years ago, Turks didn't even leave Central Asia until around 1060 A.D to colonise Anatolia and the Byzantine Empire.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@basilfawlty89 and look how well they're doing! just goes to show a little genocide and religious intolerance can go a long way
beckyromero · 36-40, F
I'm not crazy about the Turks, either. I'd much rather have Ukraine in NATO than Turkey.

But unfortunately, NATO doesn't have a means of "kicking" a member out.
Midnight express? Check Abu graighb and Guantanamo,

Makes midnight express look like Sunday school.
@SusanInFlorida I see you make excuses for criminals and abuse.

We all know right wingers believe might makes right.

And that difference you mentioned is a total fiction.
@SusanInFlorida The only person ever convicted in the US for the torture program was a civilian who exposed the crimes.

But keep telling yourself lies if it makes you feel better.

I don't live in Paris. I don't see Britian going to war anytime soon.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Lostpoet read the post again. not just the subject line.
Why tho?
Don’t the allies just use the US army with the UN authority..
we just feed them cash 🇦🇺
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout NATO has NEVER been called into combat. Not once, since it's initial establishment in the 1950s. Not even when the "coalition of the willing" was assembled to push back saddam. THAT's how little confidence we have in NATO member states like Turkey.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I'm unapologetically on the side of Greece with this dispute. If you know how Greeks were treated by Turks historically, especially the indigenous Greek minority in Turkey, not to mention the indigenous Greeks of Cyprus, you'd wholly understand Greece's position.
