When concerned with fairness, we sometimes forget stability. Everyone is bias.

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Democracy is the most flawed political system, until you try to invent a replacement.

Absolutely not. The franchise is extended to all those who are deemed to possess citizenship. If the outcome is a complete horlicks, that is a reflection on the society that is being governed and perhaps a wake up call to improve education, the quality of political discourse, and civic culture in general.

It's the "least-worse" of all the options we've tried so far
Yes. . . . BUT!!

"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government - except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…" — Winston Churchill
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Think Churchill said,, democracy is the worst kind of government apart from everything else that’s been tried !

I don't know of any political system that is truly fair and unbiased.

In my country we can't require literacy tests....in fact there are stronger tests to become a citizen than to remain one :)

It's the media that destroy democracy, not everyday people.

Instead of having media outlets provide news during elections we should all be sent the manifesto of each party and then vote accordingly.

Suspending political talk in every outlet and on every news channel could see real change. Also political debate shouldn't be encouraged because it just invites people to compete with each other and reinforces their harmful agendas and biases. Some people think it's a sign of a good democracy if there is constant political talk, but political outcomes in nations where this routinely happens suggest otherwise and the "democracy" is horrible and toxic.

It's incumbent on both private an public sectors to educate the electorate. If I had it my way, school children from the age of 12 and prisoners would have access to secret ballots. When restrictions begin being placed on the right to choose their leadership, it allows voices to be drowned out.
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
@SW-User Some voices don’t hold the merit to be heard. Or are too dangerous to be permitted. These voters are just meat for their own democratically appointed oppressor
SW-User
@Ceinwyn Agree to disagree. Who gets to decide who merits a voice? There in lies the problem, they tend to become the oppressor.
The American framers understood the masses were not to be trusted to vote . Hamilton even said they could be influenced by foreign interference. That’s why the original intention was for the members of the EC who were expected to be learned and trusted men to choose the president . Of course that’s not what today is happening, which is why American democracy is in trouble.

Well first of all democracy is one vote shy of Anarchy. The United States is a Democratic Republic which is totally different than the democracy the only similarity is the people still vote but in a Democratic Republic the rule of law makes it to where a simple majority can't change the law. With a democracy if you have 50.1% of the vote you can change any law you want you can make all women slaves you can make all of One race asleep with just 50.1% of the vote. In a Democratic Republic you have the law that must be triumphed. In a Democratic Republic if you wanted to make slavery legal you would have to have I believe it's a 70% vote in both the house and the Senate and it would have to be signed by the president.

{@ceinwyn] alas that is your democratic right in most country that have democracy . alas some people are feeble minded and cannot see the wood for the trees and are easily persuaded just look at the m.a,g,a in the united states

The simple truth is that everyone deserves the right to vote on the issues which affect them and they should not be excluded on the basis of intelligence which is often a factor of education which itself is a factor of privilege. What brings balance is that elections are decided by a majority and extreme views or uneducated views cannot carry influence unless they have become mainstream. If they have then any vote on that basis is representative, even if undesirable to some.
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
@SW-User But I’ve seen people voting for policies that will financially harm them or put them at a disadvantage just be cause the candidate is a better speaker than the opposition.

It seems if your are a better speaker you can convince slugs to vote for salt. And sure that’s not a functioning system.

@Ceinwyn Oh for sure, a person who can better present their views can win over audiences. That's the nature of debate. The arguments don't necessarily have to be based in fact, they merely have to be compelling. It is then for the audience to be discerning, to think for themselves. Some will do that, some won't. This is also why a free media is so important, because they are allowed to challenge and fact check the narrative. The alternative is living in Russia, China or North Korea.

Democracy is not perfect but there has yet to be presented a better option which doesn't openly discriminate.
Only when the President has orange skin. 🤣
The hope is the cream rises to the top.

While you’re not wrong there’s no answer for this humans can achieve without a shit load of wars. Sadly.

People don’t like ideas like this. Even though they have nothing better.
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
@WintaTheAngle I think you could be right. I’m expecting outrage.
Firstly. AMERIKKKA is not a true democracy. The founders made sure of that when they amended the constitution and created judicial the branch. America has always been controlled by the elites. From 1776 to 1870, only white male landowners were allowed to vote. Blacks and women were denied basic rights. Now here we are 250 later and America is still controlled by the same two parties. The media controls the outcome of every election .
MethDozer · M
The answer is no, everyone gets a vote
MethDozer · M
@dale74 He didn't get the vote. He was ascended in the Republics equivilent of the Electoral College
dale74 · M
@MethDozer electoral college allows everybody's vote to count and you don't have just three or four Mega large cities or Urban population areas that determine everything for everyone else that's why there's the Electoral College
MethDozer · M
@dale74 loooooool

In democracy, whoever owns the most resources is able to control what the population sees in the media. Thus they control public perception and cause the public to vote in a way that suits them, with the public believing it was completely out of their own free volition.

The political parties have no true differences. One would expect, in these democratic countries of freedom and wealth, that the people have a very comfortable existence for its people. What really matters is the continued existence of this group of 'democracy makers'.
