Frances Fukuyama is a moron . . .

In case you don't recall who this guy is: in 1992 Dr. Fukuyama wrote a best selling “non fiction” book called “The End of History”, which promoted the liberal/democracy view that the world was only going to get better and better. And that the democratic west had achieved peaceful co-existence with the worlds totalitarian regimes. Regimes which weren't (in his view) all that totalitarian, and should be allowed to oppress their people without criticism, in the interest of preventing supply chain disruptions and unpleasant rhetoric.

Fukuyama is (naturally) a college professor (at Stanford University) and has been a valued “thought leader” for left wing think tanks for 30 years. He also earned a gazillion dollars from his ridiculous book, and it's sequel “House of the Dragon – why China will conquer Westeros”. (Ful disclosure - I made this part up)

Fukuyama is a moron. Stanford University is a pox on our educational system for promoting his ridiculous views, which ignore the actual arc of human history. The democrat party is an unindicted co-conspirator in the deaths of millions living under totalitarian regimes.

How do we know Fukuyama is a moron?

IRAN – Secret Police have killed over 100 demonstrators who were protesting the death of a 22 year old girl, beaten to death by “morality police” for an improperly worn head scarf. The Ayatollah has urged them to step up the pace, and preserve his regime. Breaking news: the Iranian government has promised to kidnap and torture the relatives of Irans World Cup soccer team if they sing their national anthem off key again before today's kickoff. (this is true)

CHINA – Millions have taken to the streets, demanding an end to the Xi regime after 3 years of incomprehensible and ineffective covid lockdowns. Last week dozens of people burned to death in locked down apartment building and couldn't be rescued from their fate. China has been forced to temporarily put its rhetoric promising the imminent invasion of Taiwan on hold, while it suppresses its own population.

RUSSIA – today is day 327 of the "Ukrainian “Liberation”, and day 320 of predictions that Putin will be removed in a coup. Several oligarch yachts, include the missile carrying one owned Putin himself, remain unaccounted for on the high seas. Or European ports.

So who actually still agrees with Fukuyama and the left? Apparently Budweiser, Coca Cola, Visa, McDonalds, and the FIFA organization itself, which is profiting from “oppression world cup” in Qatar. You can't even get into the stadium if you have rainbow colored armbands or look jewish. We havent had an international sports event this ridiculous since the 1936 hitler olympics in Germany. Hitler invade Poland 2 years later, proving that the end of history wasn't at hand then, either.

Also, apparently Tesla and Apple, which welcomed Chinese thugs and goons to quell factory protests by struggling workers tired of lockdowns and going unpaid.

Apparently President Biden AND “leading republicans” who both agree that NATO will take zero action to enforce a no fly zone over Ukranian air space, or protect civilians there from artillery, rockets, drones, kidnapping, rape . . Hey, Poland – er, I mean Ukraine – you're on your own. Good luck!

This is indeed a turning point in world history. And our political leaders and corporate America have taken an unambiguous stand on the wrong side. In the interest of short term profits and mid term election victories. Which is all that actually matters, right?

A pox on all your houses. May history judge you harshly for your immorality.

You talk like a moron

has been a valued “thought leader” for left-wing think tanks for 30 years.

He isn't leftwing, by any means. He is famous as a neoliberal scholar and when he said his most famous 'end of history comments, he (correctly) identified himself as a Conservative. The right, particularly HW Bush, frequently echoed his views.

In recent years, he has denounced views from that period and is now more of an interventionist liberal than before.

So who actually still agrees with Fukuyama and the left? Apparently Budweiser, Coca Cola, Visa, Mcdonald's, and the FIFA organization itself, which is profiting from “oppression world cup” in Qatar.

Tihis is not 'the left!'

I just don't get how the US MAGA Republicans see neoliberalism as left-wing. The 'globalism' of international trade and free markets came in from the political right in the 1980s. The mainstream left then accepted the new consensus but only after election defeats.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Burnley123 he doesn't belong to any "conservative think tanks", though. your reasoning is specious
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SusanInFlorida I never mentioned think tanks. Your reasoning is clueless. I could argue, but I'd just be repeating everything I've already said!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Burnley123 I think mindless repetition is the only way you're going to get through to her.
Ynotisay · M
Wow. Hope you didn't pull a muscle with that stretch. Going back 30 years, to support your emotionally-driven diatribe is impressive.
You wouldn't know this first hand, because you weren't alive, but that book was written after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Do you know what just those two things represented? And the NATO thing just speaks to your age. You're from the magic wand generation. You want things your way and you want them NOW.
But maybe some day you'll get to travel and come to understand that the U.S. is NOT the world. Or grasp the nuance of WHY things are the way they are.
So yeah. Stanford, the third highest ranked university in the WORLD, is a pox. And he hasn't written other books where his perspective has evolved. Would you feel better if you knew he was a contributor to the rise in the neoconservative push?
Lastly?
The democrat party is an unindicted co-conspirator in the deaths of millions living under totalitarian regimes.
Kiss my ass.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Ynotisay so your theory is that college professors can make horribly bad and destructive political predictions, and never face criticism? Are you a college professor yourself, lol?
Graylight · 51-55, F
Fukuyama's theory has been analyzed and discussed frequently, and that's because it has merit. It may have been colored by supposition and it may or may not be applicable in whole to every situation, but you need not agree with a studied opinion in order to benefit from it. We don't teach only the successful space flights. Fukuyama has a place in teh world of economics.

As for Stanford, U., it's the only comprehensive university among the top ranked schools with law, medicine, engineering, education, sustainability/environment, in addition to liberal arts disciplines. Stanford is one of the hardest schools to gain acceptance. The university typically accepts less than 5% of applicants and admitted just 3.95% for the Class of 2025.
2cool4school · 46-50, F
@Graylight Stanford University is one of the top 3 schools that I considered dropping out of…
Graylight · 51-55, F
@2cool4school Oh, I know Stanford well. Not every professor’s going to get it right - it’s how we get theories and challenges, leading to progress.
2cool4school · 46-50, F
@Graylight
Oh, I know Stanford well. Not every professor’s going to get it right - it’s how we get theories and challenges, leading to progress
very true in my opinion and experience. 😊☺️
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The End of History theory was enormously influential in the 1990s. I remember studying it at university. Some politicians may have taken it as bible truth, but in the world of academia it was used to stimulate healthy debate and critical discourse (qualities that are in short supply these days). Wasn't my cup of tea by any means, but his intellectual range was breathtaking.

Also, he was writing 30 years ago. People are allowed to reflect and change their views in the light of subsequent events. People are allowed to make honest intellectual mistakes in pursuit of knowledge. That essentially is what liberalism is all about.
scrood · 31-35
@Burnley123 President Putin was the FIRST one to call Bush on 9/11 because he has secret proof it was an inside job and months later BUSH withdraws from missile defense treaty . . . hmmm . . . .
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@SunshineGirl if you write a prediction for the future, you should be held accountable when it is proved horribly wrong. China and Russia and Iran have been global pariahs pretty much the whole time since Fukuyama became famous
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@scrood wow . .. that makes up for Putin attempting genocide in chechnya, for sure
Northwest · M
Stanford University is a pox on our educational system for promoting his ridiculous views

Clearly you have no idea how a school like Stanford works, or what "tenure" means.

Not to mention your labeling of Fukuyama as a leftist thinker, or that somehow the left uses Fukuyama as an inspiration or leader.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Northwest nobody is saying Francis Fukuyama should have tenure revoked. Just that he and Stanford owe the world an apology for being horribly wrong. what's wrong with holding "thought leaders" accountable for their mendacity and misdirection?
Northwest · M
@SusanInFlorida
Just that he and Stanford

You really have no idea how w university works. Trolls be trolls.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
Interesting that you would mention Iran first, you weren't even born in 1979 when the youth of the Country rose up to depose the Shah and they wanted Ayatollah Khomeini as their ruler. Like many totalitarian regimes, this was the will of the people at the time, they wanted a non-secular Muslim Nation. Not saying you are wrong but there is a lot more to the story than 1 young woman being killed. The "Morality Police" have had a stranglehold on Iran for several decades now and only another revolt will stop the killings, nothing to do with Democrats or Liberalism. Fukayama was also a contributor to the Reagan Doctrine at that time, so he has always been a "Neo" of which ever flavour served to make him more money at the time so don't mistake him for being a Democrat, he's not, he's a grifter, nothing more, nothing less.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@spjennifer i understand why they wanted to remove the shah. i doubt they had any idea that Khomeini was going to imposed a theocracy that curtailed their freedoms, and treated women like property
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@SusanInFlorida Surprisingly the Shah was very progressive when it came to women, his wife was quite outspoken about women's rights. Iran of the 60's and 70's was very open and quite westernized and women dressed how they wanted and even went to University. They didn't realize how good they had it, it was the Muslim Clerics and Imam's that wanted Khomeini back and sadly the young men made it happen.

There's a huge amount to unpack in your post, so like a previous responder, I will only say that I agree with some of your points, not all.

But Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr has the bottom line here: The more things change the more they remain the same...

The world stays the same in absolute terms; in relative terms it can fluctuate. It's always "the best of times and the worst of times", as Dickens said.

The world is conflicted and contradictory... has always been so, will always be so. Now is no different.

So far as Fukuyama is concerned... there are lots of such speculators, none more or less correct than others. They ideate aloud and some of us are entertained by either refuting or agreeing with them.

It's difficult to call a moment in time a turning point in history when you are living through it... only hindsight can provide that clarity.
Is now a historical turning point? We may not know until we are past now.
chilloutab2 · 46-50, M
@SusanInFlorida In absolute terms the world is still quite like all the eras you mentioned... just that the garb is different. The same underlying principles are playing out.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@chilloutab2 illiteracy, violence, religious superstitions rule our planet
chilloutab2 · 46-50, M
@SusanInFlorida Totally agree... and they have done so for eons and will do so for a long while to come.
scrood · 31-35
What part don't you understand? Ukraine is NOT in NATO. USA and Britain and whoever else is entitled to fight a proxy war but YOU are not entitled to lie about it.

I bet Fukuyama has sold more books than you but that's just an armchair idiot's guess!!!
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@scrood yeah people said the same thing about Poland. "Who gives a sh!t? They don't even speak english and don't export anything we really need"
scrood · 31-35
@SusanInFlorida Britain and France fought WWII and destroyed GERMANY as an infant nation and remade it in their image in order to preserve Poland of which they had no strategic interest other than treaties - I doubt Poland would do the same for any of those
ElRengo · 70-79, M
I´m not necessarily extending my agreement to all your examples thogh yes to some of them.
But I certainly agree that Francis Fukuyama is, had been and will be a fraud.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
We on the left don't claim him. Chris Hedges and Professor Chomsky are much more perceptive.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Crazywaterspring i wasn't aware that chomsky had any opinions of Fukuyama. what were they?
plungesponge · 41-45, M
Most of the famous authors we know are only supported and allowed to become famous if their message has been approved by the current power structure. It's even worse today where people can be canceled
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@plungesponge i just heard they are cancelling the second season of "House of the Dragon". George RR Martin is going to be disappointed
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Same old, same old -- keep ranting. The world has been this way forever and any progress is slow, painful, and filled with steps backward before taking a tumble forward.
Sazzio · 31-35, M
Frances Fukuyama?? Cool name... Frances Fuckumama...
