Australia had a Royal Commission into the Robodebt debacle

Now what happens?
The commission wound up 6 days ago.
Key points
- Lawyers 'appeared to come under pressure' from Prime Minister Morrison.
- Commonwealth warned of potential legal problems two years prior
- Senior bureaucrat admitted to breaching code of conduct
- Crossed-out phrase in brief for Morrison 'watered down' seriousness of potential legal issues
- Manager described day-to-day pressures of 'overwhelmed' department
- Department head signed off on scheme without knowing if it was legal
- 'Not my responsibility' says department head

Data from the Department of Human Services has confirmed over 2000 people, many of them vulnerable, died after receiving a Centrelink Robo-Debt notice.
Secretary of the Department of Social Services Kathryn Campbell, who had headed the department responsible for robodebt, denied the idea that robodebt had led to any deaths.
“Chair, I do not accept those assertions that are being made, they are not correct,” she said. “We have apologised for the hurt and harm but none of us can imagine what goes on in individuals’ lives.”

Statements like that from the Liberal Party show a meanness against vulnerable people.
My wish is for some of those who were responsible for decisions made be held to account.
Involuntary Manslaughter?

The final report due by April 18, 2023 — hearings will recommence in December.

What is robodebt?

@deadgerbil It was an automated system regarding welfare recipients.
The Government decided to try and claw back money from the unemployed.
Each person who worked some hours whilst receiving welfare had to report their earnings.
With their welfare payment reduced some depending on how much money they earned whilst working.
An automated system was thought up to match up their earnings, their payments and the amount declared.
The system "averaged" the earnings. When to figures did not match, a Debt Notice was sent.
"You have been overpaid and must repay the money as soon as possible."
The system was completely flawed and vulnerable people were receiving Robodebt notices. Even those who had reported every dollar earned correctly.
Many vulnerable people without the ability to "repay" a non existent debt were thrown into turmoil and some committed suicide.

@Gusman that's disgusting. The gov has enough money to pay for salary increases for their politicians, according to what I just read, but they instead want to gouge the poor and vulnerable instead of absorbing the losses they were looking up reclaim, even from people who did everything right

@deadgerbil Governments have always loathed the underprivileged/unemployed.
The unemployed have very few people/organisations advocating for them so they are viewed as easy targets for pathetic politicians.
I would have those who "Failed to do their duty" who "Turned a blind eye" who "Implemented an illegal System" charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Boy the Australian Government loves their Royal Commissions don't they?
They only exist to make the higher ups feel like the problem is identified and going to be sorted out and rectified, where truthfully f#ck all happens.
