The thing is, the Republicans never "had it in the bag." Cry-baby-trump and "the base" is like a bowling ball chained to them and it was inevitable that the toxic weight of both would eventually drag them down. They lasted as long as they could. Now, it's just a matter of waiting for the corpse to go tits up.
