Remember the 'Russia Hoax' ?

Putin ally Yevgeny Prigozhin has admitted to interfering in US elections on the eve of a midterm vote in which Republicans will seek to take control of Congress and state-wide offices across the country.

“Gentlemen, we interfered, we are interfering and we will interfere, carefully, precisely, surgically and the way we do it, the way we can."

Prigozhin was responding to a request to comment on a recent Bloomberg report saying Russia was interfering in Tuesday’s US midterm elections.

The US social media analysis firm Graphika last week said that suspected Russian operatives have used far-right media platforms to criticise Democratic candidates in the lead-up to the midterm elections in a number of US states, including Georgia, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Prigozhin, together with a dozen other Russian nationals and three Russian companies was indicted in 2018 as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential elections.

Prigozhin was charged with inciting discord and dividing American public opinion ahead of the 2016 US presidential election, accusations Prigozhin, as well as the Kremlin, has previously vehemently denied.

That Prigozhin guy is a braggart. A megalomaniac.
How would they "interfere" with US elections? Do they force people to vote red or blue at gunpoint?

@helenS 'Russian operatives have used far-right media platforms to criticise Democratic candidates in the lead-up to the midterm elections in a number of US states, including Georgia, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.'

That's interference , that's what he's talking about. What don't you understand about that ?
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@helenS Why would he admit it as well?
helenS · 36-40, F
@RodionRomanovitch American right-wing extremists were happy to get Russian money to spread lies. It's an American activity.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@helenS They are stupid without misinformation.
@helenS

Nope.
Well i mean maybe, i don't know him but he's not boasting when he says that Russia can and has successfully interfered with US elections.
Propaganda, staged rallies, mud slinging. They're not coming in and tampering with the votes, they're convincing Americans to vote the way Russia wants them to vote. They're doing more or less the same thing any political campaigner does...except they're doing it from Russia and for Russia's interests.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@RodionRomanovitch facebook is a far-right media platform?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@sunsporter1649 Nobody said it was. Stay stupid.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Pikachu In France, accepting money from a foreign country during a campaign is a criminal offense. People are in jail because of that.
@sunsporter1649
facebook is a far-right media platform?
Nope.
It's just a social media platform.
But social media is a legitimately serious tool in modern voting because not only can propaganda be spread quickly and easily, the same algorithms that make micro targeting possible for ads also make microtargeting possible for propaganda.

And that's exactly what Russia did.
@helenS

Ok. But what does that have to do with whether or not Russia is capable of influencing foreign elections by nefarious means?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Pikachu Just like the millions the demonocrats spent in Israel to influence their elections? Imagine that
helenS · 36-40, F
@Pikachu Russia supports right-wing extremists all over the world. Extremist parties in Europe are supported by Russian money. People who accept Russian money should be brought to court. I see that as high treason.
@sunsporter1649

lol do you have ANY other move besides "Well what about ______ ?!!!" 😂🤣

And yes, of course the US has along history (on both sides of the isle) of influencing foreign elections or downright setting the person they want in charge.

You asked a question, i gave a straight answer.
Try to learn from that example 😁🤭
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Pikachu And every country in the world has a history of influencing American elections
@helenS

Unfortunately it's not even just about bribing people. Russia's exploitation of the internet and using it to spread information/disinformation or gather data is something at which they are quite sophisticated.
@sunsporter1649
every country in the world has a history of influencing American elections
Do they? Source?

lol wait....are you getting defensive about the idea of the US influencing the politics of other nations?
That's just a thing, guy.
And it's not even a secret. Sorry.

@helenS I don't know. Did people not get vaccinated and die from Covid because of what they "heard?" Or came across while "doing their own research?" There's a reason the right is targeted by these types of strategies. It's called the path of least resistance.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Pikachu I'm afraid you overestimate Russia's capabilities. Russia is generally overestimated. The world found out their armed forces are a bad joke. Their soldiers are just good for rape and torture until they are killed, and replaced by similar biomass. Russian significance on the internet (and other channels) is overrated too, in my opinion. The Russians are just a bunch of impotent killers.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Ynotisay Oh I mean, if those righties don't get vaccinated, and die of covid – so be it. 😏
@helenS

This isn't my estimation. This is the estimation of counterintelligence and security agencies and is not based on Russian propaganda but on documented instances of Russian cyber attacks.

Don't be lulled into thinking that because Russia is bungling the ground war in Ukraine that they must therefor be incompetent in every area.
Indeed, that is exactly the sort of belief that Russian cyber intelligence would like you to have.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Pikachu Totally disagree with you – on that specific point only. It's all just posture. Russia is like a frog that blows up like a balloon to scare others. If you put a needle in it, it will go pfffffttttt....
@helenS

I don't think it's just posturing because they have a successful track record.

May 2022. Russian hackers hit Italian websites with a DDoS attack, including the Senate, the Ministry of Defence and the National Health Institute. The group states its goal was to target NATO countries and Ukraine.

April 2022. Russian hackers targeted the Costa Rican Ministry of Finance in a cyberattack, crippling tax collection and export systems. The newly elected President of Costa Rica declared a national emergency as a result of the attack and the group asked for $20 million in ransom or it plans to leak the stolen data.

And so on ad so forth.
Sad to say that at least on this front, Russia is not just boasting.
