Scottish Independence

Tribalism?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
To some extent, with some, perhaps.

More to the point is that those wanting independence (slightly under half the population as far as can be determined) have differing views on how Scotland would relate to England. The SNP seems to want it to be within the Commonwealth, for example; others want nothing to do with that.

Some want an independent Scotland to join the EU, presumably hoping the taxpayers of Europe generally will bail them out by lots of big grants. That is is by no means a given, but they miss the irony, surely!

However, and vitally, none appear to have thought it all through. The results and potential implications, starting with but going far beyond, the loss of United Kingdom taxpayers' money routed through the UK government, are much more than they talk about or even realise.

Referring to ancient history and romantic views of that, are not enough and really, not even relevant. It may have been in 1850, but won't be in 2050.

The same would be true of Wales, which I think would be even worse off.

I think it has to do with $$$.

For a very long time, Scotland was like America's poor southern states, always in need of subsidies from the wealthier part of the union. Scotland couldn't survive without the UK's wealth.

But that changed when North Sea oil & gas started to flow. See, Scotland can lay claim to large tracts of the North Sea, and thus claim the right to tax much of the $$$ flowing from there.

I don't know how good those claims are or how Scotland could enforce them. But if you're not too imaginative, it all looks so simple - Scexit, join the EU & Euro, and watch the money roll in!! What could be simpler???
More like taking back what is theirs after centuries.

Every branch of my family has relatives in England. So, no thanks to the bureaucracy involved in splitting. Besides, the Scots Government couldn't run a bath.

What would the pros and cons be for independence
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@deadgerbil I think coming together is better than being apart
Graylight · 51-55, F
@JimboSaturn I do,too, generally speaking and I understand there are long and short range fiscal considerations, but it's not too far a stretch to allow a country to be the nation it once was, independent and separate from and imperialistic tradition.
