For a very long time, Scotland was like America's poor southern states, always in need of subsidies from the wealthier part of the union. Scotland couldn't survive without the UK's wealth.
But that changed when North Sea oil & gas started to flow. See, Scotland can lay claim to large tracts of the North Sea, and thus claim the right to tax much of the $$$ flowing from there.
I don't know how good those claims are or how Scotland could enforce them. But if you're not too imaginative, it all looks so simple - Scexit, join the EU & Euro, and watch the money roll in!! What could be simpler???
