Is he bluffing ?

This morning Putin made the implicit threat that he was prepared to use nuclear weapons in his losing war in Ukraine.

In January the People’s Republic of China, the French Republic, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America issued a joint statement ;

"We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. As nuclear use would have far-reaching consequences, we also affirm that nuclear weapons—for as long as they continue to exist—should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war. "

So which is it ; An empty threat from a desperate and deluded leader , or a serious warning that he'd be prepared to risk mutually assured destruction rather than lose the war and most likely his Presidency ?

For everyone's sake he better be bluffing. I don't even think China will stand by Russia if they use nukes. I'm amazed that some people on here and elsewhere still are Russian apologists. Pretty crazy

@deadgerbil You realize you are arguing with a man who would credit Trump for sunrise and blame Biden for sunset, right?

@graphite
There wouldn't have been an invasion if Trump were in office.
Serious question: do you think you could divulge the next Powerball winning numbers? Thanks!
@graphite Seriously?
Trump admires Putin, and claimed friendship and business deals with him shortly before he stood as candidate for POTUS.

During his time in office, Trump was keen to avoid wars:
tried to make peace with North Korea;
withdrew from the allied European anti-nuclear pact with Iran;
and withdrew American soldiers from Afghanistan.

Biden, on the other hand, sends aid - armaments and satellite intelligence - to the Ukraine. This surely tells us that Biden is no Putin supporter.
Biden supports democratically elected leaders.

@SW-User Widespread disorder is practically impossible in today's Russia. That's not to discount the fact that the mobilisation announcement appears to be going down like a bag of nails with the wider public , but when/if his demise comes it will almost certainly come from either a palace coup or an old style KGB 'disappearance'.

Bluff - trying to scare the west into backing down.
But he is a dangerous man. Whatever he tells himself, it's his own immortality he is working towards and the audience that matters to him is the Russian people. The loss of face on so many levels right now and fear of an ignoble end such as being overthrown, being marked a failure make it fraught.

{@rodionromanovitch] 🤷‍♂️with putin you can never tell with him as he likes too play games and keep the world guessing . as you say he never came out in so many words he subtly applied the suggestion and too leave western leaders to pick the bones of mad vlads intention are in ukraine

Russia still has “tactical nuclear weapons” capabilities as well as chemical and biological weapons. This is not exactly what the news is clearly stating as they want to make it look like we are going to see Hiroshima and Nagasaki like events similar to WW2. Biden is also being urged to walk back his statements about nuclear Armageddon because it is far more more likely that Russia would use a tactical nuke like the Poseidon missile and the absence of the Russian submarine that deploys is a very big red flag 🚩 as to what may come.

@RodionRomanovitch I find it a little ironic that less than 4-5 years ago people that were staunch republicans were trying to convince the rest of the US government that Russia is most likely responsible for UFOs or UAPs and I’m pretty sure that it’s obvious now that if Russia had anything that was more advanced than the US military they would have used it before letting their military get decimated by the Ukrainian and their allies. Even Chechen fighters have joined the cause with Ukrainians and that’s a perfect example of the concept “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.
@2cool4school It is amazing how many people old enough to remember the cold war are running around with their heads cut off. We are in a new cold war. Back in the first one this sort of rhetoric was so common people wrote pop songs about it.

@RodionRomanovitch
Put simply , the more it is talked about the likelier it becomes
I don’t think I agree. It depends upon who’s saying it. The news media like you to pay attention and so they often overdramatize what they are reporting upon. Likewise people in power like to give their populations and rival populations something that makes them seem like they are the most aware and most prepared for the current situation and often the worst situation. I don’t think we’re nearly as close to the use of nuclear weapons in the form of the ICBM and bombs with nuclear warheads. It just doesn’t achieve anything that would benefit anyone. There are too many people that can still keep Putin from a scorched earth maneuver. And if the US were to do anything that would constitute an attack on Russia we run into problems with the other major countries on the UN namely China and India. I’m sure that the 5 Eyes are strongly focused upon the same countries that are a threat to the US namely China N.Korea and Iran but an all out war takes time to move strategic pieces in place. That said it’s interesting that the USS Ronny Reagan is now off the Korean Peninsulas coast and I’m sure that ghe forces on Guam and Diego Garcia especially are drilling for the possibility of being called into action. We’re just going to have to wait and see. But I don’t think living in fear is going to help things. You can of course but it’s a waste of time and energy in my opinion.
Putin is losing, the man is in danger of losing his control of Russia and probably his own life. People like Putin and Trump, when faced with a loss of power, in their own mind, their only recourse is a total act of defiance.
Putin may well go Nuclear.
@independentone Don't know about Trump but I could definitely see Putin developing a "sudden illness." or acute lead poisoning.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Trump would just be an added bonus
Adrift · 61-69, F
@independentone well I have heard that you will see the worst part of a narcissist when he is loosing control.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
My instinct is he’s not bluffing and he’s going to do it.
@BackyardShaman he smells a bit desperate lately, doesnt he.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@robingoodfellow yes he does
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
It’s a bluff. In January he didn’t bluff ,he just sent 100k troops to the border .
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@AthrillatheHunt For what it's worth I think he's bluffing too.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I'm surprised China was part of the statement.

@JimboSaturn They know there would only be losers, any survivors' lives would be rather bleak

I’d say the latter. I appreciate we only ever hear the Western side but he does seem to have lost the plot. He’s knows he personally won’t die in a nuclear war. He’ll be in a bunker somewhere.

@metaldog well I'd say the guy at 1:18 is on borrowed time now
@SW-User poor old Russia
graphite · 61-69, M
So he wants to remove the US's status as the only country to use nuclear weapons on other human beings. Is he really thinking this through?
Of course. Arming Ukraine, trying to include Ukraine in NATO obviously brings that threat alive!
Go Murka! That's the Final Solution! You won!
graphite · 61-69, M
Putin has made an a** of himself with this war. Like if the US started a war with Canada and lost.

@robingoodfellow That would be any sensible person's take on it. Unfortunately though our resident Kremlin apologist thinks he's being cute by parsing Putin's words for him. I'm sick of his bullshit.
