The thing is a nail gun literally has two triggers. The regular trigger and the pressure trigger that gets compressed when it it pushed up against what you are wanting to nail. How exactly was he going to even use a nail gun at range. He would have to have pressed it up against their bodies in order for it to work.
I mean he could have taped down the pressure trigger but I don't think he is smart enough to do that if he thought a nail gun was a good weapon to begin with.

@Carla I think he should do that. All by himself. Then when he has singlehandily overthrown the entire government he can write a new constitution all on his own. Then proclaim himself both leader of the nation and the head of the church.
