'Don't say gay' in FL now in effect

The measure has already had a chilling effect on public school educators, who in some cases have been instructed to remove LGBTQ+ Pride flags and photographs of same-sex partners from their classrooms to avoid violating the law.

Republican lawmakers have from the start argued that the measure’s only intent is to empower parents. Democrats and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups say the now-law is intentionally vague and represents a huge step backward for equality.

A number of teachers have already approached the FEA about a series of trainings that have taken place in some school districts. During those trainings, teachers said, they were instructed to remove LGBTQ+ Pride flags, safe space stickers and photos of same-sex partners from their classrooms in the lead-up to Friday.
The Hill

Because of we refuse to teach "gay", kids'll never learn it on their own...
spjennifer · 61-69, T
There will be a price to pay for this for Florida, being gay isn't taught, it's genetic and the children who are gay will extract a political price for this Bill as they grow up, politicians and their parents will not be able to hide behind their misguided religious beliefs forever. Children will learn about homosexuality one way or another, if not in school and not from their parents, then their friends and the Internet will teach them, way to go Florida 😖
deadgerbil · 26-30
Because lessening discrimination and teaching inclusivity is such a bad thing
The Bible has that gay scene when those guys show up at Lot's house and demand to rape his guests, and he gives them his daughters instead. We need to make sure our children are not exposed to this degenerate filth.
Carla · 61-69, F
@LeopoldBloom indeed.
We should absolutely ban that thing.
walabby · 70-79, M
@LeopoldBloom
......... and then there's this.
How the mighty have fallen in the midst of battle!
Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
I am distressed for you my brother Jonathan;
Greatly beloved were you to me;
your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.”
(2 Samuel 1:23, 26-27
Graylight · 51-55, F
@walabby Hey, don't print that filth here, buddy. Bad enough God's busy smiting all over the place. On a bet, he gets impressionable mortals to sacrifice their children. Tricks men into drowning themselves. Teaches intolerance and death for enemies.

Filth, I tell you.
SW-User
Are people in Florida really that stupid as to believe that if you say the word "gay" children will therefore "choose" to be gay...?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@SW-User Yes, yes they are. And don't think DeSantis isn't going to do everything in his power to make sure people can't be married here, too.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
As the future arrives. The world descends backwards.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@SW-User the world mate. Many other countries are not exempt from such bullshit. Pardon my French
SW-User
@Gangstress Maybe not, but America, at the moment, is embodying a particular kind of stupidity (in the Republican states, at least).
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@SW-User there is no maybes about it
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
If parents are so sensitive to liberal education and challenges to strongly held beliefs, surely the answer is to withdraw their child from public education, rather than seek to interfere in professional judgement and the freedom of others.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@SunshineGirl school is not a daycare center in which to insulate an indoctrinate children. The very purpose of education is to expand one's horizons, to see what's over the next hill. Kids can find anything they want on the Internet. And they will, because the same parents so worrying about what their child is exposed to in the classroom are also the very same parents who allow computers in bedrooms, who watch their kids on their phones without ever checking them

Their children will grow to resent them, and rightly so.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Graylight Exactly. I hate how everyone thinks they know more about education than teachers and that schools are there mainly for the convenience of parents. I think it's a very healthy sign if the older generation is slightly disturbed by what is being taught to their children . . perhaps they may even be motivated to examine their own opinions and beliefs 🙂
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
Is it really necessary to teach 5 to 8 year old children about sexual orientation? Alternative sexual lifestyles? As a parent, I didn't want anyone gay or straight talking to my children about sex. Not a teacher or preacher or the weird guy down the street. Teaching kids that young about sex is like giving them a light and a can of gas, "Go on now, have fun and be safe."

basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Roadsterrider they're not teaching kids about sex, they're literally just saying gay people exist. Children are exposed to heterosexuality from a young age if they see mums and dads holding hands, hugging or kissing. Why is that not "indoctrination", but if it's two same gender people, it suddenly is?
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@basilfawlty89 From Education Week: "Among the prohibitions: The seven-page bill prohibits instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Lessons for students older than 3rd grade have to be “age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

To me, those things should be taught by "mums and dads". Health classes started in 5th grade for me, basic stuff about how the body works, how babies are made. Why change up the curriculum to include "instruction on sexual orientation" before children even know what sexual orientation is. If parents are concerned, they should explain different sexual orientations to their child.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
And SCOTUS is working on dismantling our rights to free speech so these laws cannot be challenged. In fact, challenging Republicans will be felony.
Carla · 61-69, F
Oh, kids will learn it. They will learn it as i did.
It was no easy lesson.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Carla Indeed, an informed child may make different and less risky choices but gawd forbid we teach them anything to do with human sexuality, like they're not already having sex at 12 and 13 now, duhhrrrr 😖
Carla · 61-69, F
@spjennifer everyone that supports this are all fucking morons. No exceptions.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Carla But sadly it's the children who will suffer the consequences of this nonsense, the Right is trying to drag us all down into their world of misguided religious beliefs 😖
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
That's about as logical s anything else that's happening
Carla · 61-69, F
@ozgirl512 right? We have now entered "the outer limits".
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@Carla i think we've passed them somehow... Seriously it's like medevial times
Carla · 61-69, F
@ozgirl512 it has been a very distressing seven years.
Every positive move forward we have experienced is being ripped away.
And people are cheering it all.
Next: governor DeFuckFace bans all colors as they could be used to make homemade rainbows.
In other news... Teach your kids how to make IEDs for science fair.
@SW-User If I had to choose I'd sadly have to go with Trump. Cause at least he is stupid. And old enough that he would probably stroke out.
DeSantis is too evil AND intelligent AND young. He is the bigger threat.
SW-User
@canusernamebemyusername Hmm I'm surprised. The one slight burnishment to DeSantis's credentials seems to be his environmental record. As a concerned activist I would take that.. but I respect your decision.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@SW-User The "concerned activist" has allowed the ongoing exploitation of natural aquifers and other resources for big water, big sugar and development. Every year, we lose the gulf to red tide, a direct result of chemical and pesticide runoff. Our aquifers are the sole source of water for this state and they are being bled dry through Nestle and other large corporations with contracts that allow them to do so.

It's difficult to describe a state that was sold for development three and four generations back. This has been the business interest of the wealthy and corporate since its inception. What this means is that the people have lost almost all control or say over development and the result is the barren wasteland that's being created at light speed. Anything DeSantis is doing is for the public eye and token at best.
SW-User
It really seems like it is time for all Americans who actually value justice and freedom, to move to Canada. Except then that would leave the USA to these bigots........
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@SW-User The thing is, the bigots are a minority, we, the silent majority, need to speak up and say enough! and make sure these cretins don't get elected!
SW-User
@spjennifer I hope you will... but what are you going to do about SCOTUS?
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@SW-User SCOTUS can be neutered, if the Democrats add more seats and appoint less radical Judges, they shouldn't be determining how we live our lives, only adjudicating the laws that are enacted by our elected officials who supposedly represent us.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Readin',Writin' and arithmetic.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@MarineBob so no history, biology, chemistry, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus or civics? You want children to grow up to be dumbasses?
Carla · 61-69, F
@MarineBob sorry bob, but you are mistaken.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@MarineBob oddly we never had police at our schools, I was never in a mass shooting and I live in a third world country. We do have sensible gun regulations though...
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
A law with no purpose other than to feed whipped up hateful hysteria.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Kids say the word gay all the time. They don’t use it in the sexual way.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I'd put up a pride flag and a poster of Rob Halford just out of spite.
