'Don't say gay' in FL now in effect

The measure has already had a chilling effect on public school educators, who in some cases have been instructed to remove LGBTQ+ Pride flags and photographs of same-sex partners from their classrooms to avoid violating the law.

Republican lawmakers have from the start argued that the measure’s only intent is to empower parents. Democrats and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups say the now-law is intentionally vague and represents a huge step backward for equality.

A number of teachers have already approached the FEA about a series of trainings that have taken place in some school districts. During those trainings, teachers said, they were instructed to remove LGBTQ+ Pride flags, safe space stickers and photos of same-sex partners from their classrooms in the lead-up to Friday.

Because of we refuse to teach "gay", kids'll never learn it on their own...

Is it really necessary to teach 5 to 8 year old children about sexual orientation? Alternative sexual lifestyles? As a parent, I didn't want anyone gay or straight talking to my children about sex. Not a teacher or preacher or the weird guy down the street. Teaching kids that young about sex is like giving them a light and a can of gas, "Go on now, have fun and be safe."

@Roadsterrider they're not teaching kids about sex, they're literally just saying gay people exist. Children are exposed to heterosexuality from a young age if they see mums and dads holding hands, hugging or kissing. Why is that not "indoctrination", but if it's two same gender people, it suddenly is?

@basilfawlty89 From Education Week: "Among the prohibitions: The seven-page bill prohibits instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Lessons for students older than 3rd grade have to be “age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

To me, those things should be taught by "mums and dads". Health classes started in 5th grade for me, basic stuff about how the body works, how babies are made. Why change up the curriculum to include "instruction on sexual orientation" before children even know what sexual orientation is. If parents are concerned, they should explain different sexual orientations to their child.
