Gilead - Phase One Started

Phase 1 completed: overturn Roe v Wade
Phase 2 commenced: Justice Thomas suggests that contraception and same sex marriage are next

Welcome to Gilead

The only that matters at this point, is making sure the GOP does not gain control of either house. Then appoint 5 new Justices, otherwise nothing matters, as every single issue will be decided by a Supreme Court that does NOT represent the people.

This is just another extreme example of minority rule that exists in the US. After the rulings yesterday and today, men and women have an absolute and fundamental right to own a weapon, including assault weapons specifically designed for killing as many human beings as possible quickly and efficiently, but a woman does not have the right to make reproductive decisions for her own body, even if she is raped or eleven years old and impregnated as a result of incest.

The turn towards a non-secular Nation by a Christian Fundamentalist minority began with the "Moral Majority" back in the days of Reagan. I find it scary how much power they have acquired in so short a time. It is well past time for the SCOTUS to be put to the same electoral process as the House and the Senate. These lifetime appointments will be the ruin of our Nation.
Northwest · M
@spjennifer We all need to wake up and focus on what WILL happen if the GOP gains control of both houses.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Northwest You're preaching to the choir but unless the Dems begin to make it loud and clear exactly where this is going, I don't know if it will have much impact...
Northwest · M
@spjennifer I agree. The President needs to act now. State clearly that he's not running for office in 2024, and the party needs to introduce another candidate, not Kamala Harris, as a credible alternate.

The party's left needs to also take a vacation, and when they get back, join fucking reality. Now is NOT the time for theatricals. There will be nothing left to take a principled stand on, if the GOP takes both Houses, or even one House. The only solution now, is to stack up the Court. I am going to reach out to my representatives, even though one of them is part of the extreme left.

I'm just glad I'm not an American.

Your Supreme Court has already made crystal clear how swiftly Christian nationalist judiciaries will change the law to suit their vision of society ruled by a minority reactionary elite with a preferred religion and a prescribed code of sexual behaviour (for women, not men, because this is ultimately about controlling women) all backed by the coercive power of the state.

They won't stop at Roe vs Wade. Welcome to Gilead indeed.
Northwest · M
@SW-User Generally speaking, Europeans progressed beyond religion. We regressed, starting with the Moral Majority, that brought Reagan to power, and we've been regressing since.

However, the majority of Americans do not support this. Trump found a loophole, and used it, along with the GOP, to impose a minority rule.

This needs to change.

Maybe NOW people will move on from online petitions and GO VOTE. Both sides are not the same.
Northwest · M
@Crazywaterspring
Both sides are not the same.

I get tired of this argument: both sides are guilty. Only ONE side is taking us to Gliead, and it's NOT the center and center left.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@Northwest Both sides used abortion as a cash cow for years. The conservatives just lost a big revenue stream from that part of their demographic. More people could be motivated to vote. Maybe.
Northwest · M
@Crazywaterspring The right of a woman to vote, has been a core part of the Democrat party's platoform.

Without $s, you cannot keep that right. So, yes, it's a cash cow, but it's not for politicians' benefit, it's to make sure this remains a right for every citizen. More $s are now needed to, hopefully, launch public campaigns.
The handmaids tale is a documentary.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Spunkylama Sadly true.
SW-User
@Spunkylama It's fast becoming one. Not even Gilead's obsession with cutting emissions will make up for it.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Spunkylama

The handmaids tale is a documentary.

It will soon enough become a Reality Show 😖
I wonder if Justice Thomas has realized
that according to HIM
the reactivation of Miscegenation laws. (Virginia and others) could result in his arrest there
for marrying a white woman.,
or maybe that was his plan all along

Let's focus on the House first, please. That would be hard enough.

The rest of the Gilead stuff coming from SCOTUS is concerning, but Thomas will never be able to lead the other justices, and may well put an end to Originalism with opinions like Dobbs.
Northwest · M
@MistyCee If we don't get our shit together in November, it's game over and we're looking at the 1930s.
@Northwest Or 1880s, before New Yorks gun law.

The problem is, I don't think "liberals"or Democrats can win on their own and we're not going to see much progress in terms of this regressive mess until there are enough cracks in the goose stepping on the other side.

It's starting to happen, but it's taking a lot of time. For example, I don't think either Kavanaugh or Barrett have much use for Thomas, and Trump's days of totally bullying other Republicans are numbered.

Even that silly Gun legislation is a good sign.
Northwest · M
@MistyCee It's about every single American with a functioning brain, and not just about liberals or democrats.
How can we appoint 5 new justices? Aren’t they appointed for life? 🤔
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Vivaci It is similar to the presidential impeachment and would be whatever Congress decided was impeachable. Only one justice has ever been impeached, and that was on political grounds in 1804. Samuel P. Chase was acquitted by the Senate and served until 1811. One other justice, Abe Fortas, resigned under threat of impeachment in 1969 for accepting money to serve on the foundation of a man who was under investigation for securities fraud.
@windinhishair In that case, I hope (I want to wish something but I’ll say that in my mind. 🤐)

🤞
Northwest · M
@Vivaci What @windinhishair said. At this point, I don't really care about setting a precedent. The country's future is at stake, and the other side does not play by the rules.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Agreed!

Just want to let you know this post isn't in my totally dead feed! Nor are many others.

Have to use the groups to even see this. 😡

A huge pain!
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@DeWayfarer I have a feeling that this is happening a lot. I usually have good engagement but the last few days have been super quiet.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@JaggedLittlePill now after this ruling this is a very important to me. Just made a suggestion post for the admin on this issue. I can only Hope that they will listen. 😞
I hate to say it but they deserve what is coming...
Northwest · M
@Spunkylama
I hate to say it but they deserve what is coming...

You mean those who asked for it? As in the Southern States? If so, then yes, residents of these states will now have to face up to the choices their politicians are imposing.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
Not just same sex marriage...same sex relationships all together.

SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@spjennifer I noticed that Thomas stopped short of interracial marriage.
Northwest · M
@SageWanderer
I noticed that Thomas stopped short of interracial marriage.

I wonder why 🤣
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Northwest Although if it does come up then he may be able to remove the albatross from his neck.
Moxymoxy · F
Contraception? No way.
