Why do Americans avoid a simple grid to divide their voting districts and public elections?

Why are Americans afraid of democracy?

A grid doesn't work. Constituency boundaries have to be regularly reviewed so as to keep all constituencies roughly equal in population.

Here's a link to the independent public body that does it in England: https://boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/about-us/

The US has no such commission, instead they have political appointees who do it with the result that the boundaries get drawn so as to favour particular parties. This is called gerrymandering, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering.

@ninalanyon it doesn't? You can't use a city centered grid?

A population centered grid?
Of course you can't? Not that mathematics prevents you-. You just won't.

@Changeisgonnacome So you mean some kind of division that gives each district roughly the same number of voters? If so then that is exactly what I described. But the common definition of a grid is one that is spatially uniform, and typically made of square cells.

@Changeisgonnacome What does "population centered grid" even mean?

Does You in that phrase refer to me? If so then I presume that you have mistaken me for an American, I'm not, I'm just an interested onlooker.

@OggggO @OggggO let's not know-. Together say it-. What does that even mean? Repeat. Repeat.

@Changeisgonnacome You high or something?

@OggggO I alternate between thinking she's high and thinking she's a troll. Then I start to think, why not both?

@OggggO just mathematically correct. A grid does solve the un democracy problem. You just want to keep the problem. No kidding!
