Gun culture has been made a core element of American self-perception. It will not go away soon. Even if thousands of children were killed at a time. A school that has been converted into a slaughterhouse will only lead to "Hey we need more guns to protect our children." I believe that school shootings will result in sold-out gun stores.

@helenS The shooting at the concert in Las Vegas killed about 60 and wounded over 500. And could easily have been far, far worse. And still the Republicans did nothing. There is no limit to what they will tolerate to allow easy access to weapons of mass killing.

@windinhishair It's a disease in the American soul. 😕
Pretty sad because America is really a beautiful country, with beautiful people. But even a beautiful person can have cancer.

@windinhishair Sadly it isn't just the "Republicans" who've done nothing, the Democrats are guilty of it too, they all either heartily support or are fearful of the 2nd Amendment. We are all guilty of doing nothing about it and until we force our politicians to act ("Grow a backbone"), this will continue to happen and many more children will die. "We the people" must act and force out elected officials to act, otherwise... 😖

@spjennifer Actually, Democrats have tried to pass legislation, but it always fails to get the 60 votes needed to sustain a filibuster. So I do think it is appropriate to blame it primarily on one party. You are correct, however, that the people should elect representatives that will act appropriately.

@windinhishair I realize that but what usually happens is this is as far as they will go, once they fail it goes away, till the next mass murder! Make it an election issue, stand up for those who've been murdered and don't stop till it gets done.
Chris Murphy had a good say about it yesterday, "What are we here for?", to sit around and twiddle their thumbs and wring their hands in despair? It's well past time for some real leadership, someone there needs to grow a pair!

@spjennifer Senator Murphy gave a great speech in the Senate. Everyone should listen to his words and take action.

I think following this latest mass killing of children, it will be an election issue. I hope so.

@Graylight The root cause is easy access to weapons of mass killing. Addressing this access will provide the biggest bang for the buck.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@windinhishair Guy has problems, Guy goes somewhere public to hurt others. Guy uses firearm to claim as many live as possible in the shortest amount of time.

How do you think this story would have played out with a knife? Less access to firearms means fewer deaths. But that's a meaningless equation, isn't it. Because the numbers of innocent "we care about the children" lives destroyed allowance seems to be infinity.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Graylight Obviously someone armed with a knife would not be able to kill as many people as with weapons of mass carnage. Every life saved is worthwhile.

@windinhishair Agreed, we can only hope but I have my doubts and not a lot of faith in our current crop of politicians...

@windinhishair In Japan in 2016, a man armed with a knife killed 19 people. I think it was at a nursing home.

@ProfessorPlum77 A couple of years ago, a man armed with more than a dozen assault weapons and thousands of rounds designed to kill did so in Las Vegas. 60 people died and more than 600 were wounded.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@ProfessorPlum77 So they should have armed all the seniors living there, even those with dementia, right?
