This is why I keep saying regulate guns like cars.
You wouldn't give a car to a child, you wouldn't give a car to someone who has no license, you wouldn't give a car to someone with a history of vehicular manslaughter.

@basilfawlty89 America does do a background check. We do not give guns to people with mental issues. Past criminal records.

But they can still get it one way or the other. Plus we don’t keep on evaluating the people who have had guns for many years. That’s maybe something we should do.

@Jonjdw The US does not have universal background checks. You could give an assault weapon to your severely mentally ill nephew, and there is no record of that.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Jonjdw pretty much over here, it's license, registration, background check and checks every few months to see if your guns are safely stored and you're not facing any issues.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@windinhishair but by law you’re supposed to have whoever buys that gun from you get a background check

and if somebody does something illegal with that gun the gun owner is responsible. The gun on her at the gun is registered to.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Jonjdw There are so many loopholes that about half the gun sales in Texas do not go through background checks.

We need to do more. Much more. The majority of Americans support it.
@Jonjdw
We do not give guns to people with mental issues.
There are some black folks in Buffalo who would disagree.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@LordShadowfire we don’t know how he got the gun or where he got it from or if he had mental illness when he got the gun. At least I don’t know
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@LordShadowfire and they must be documented mental issues.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@windinhishair you’re right I don’t know what the ratio is.

but there’s no way to stop people from getting guns even if they’re completely banned and the manufacturing is completely shut down.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Jonjdw With so many guns out there, nothing will completely stop mass shootings. But we can make weapons capable of killing many people quickly much less available and at least start the process of reducing them.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@windinhishair yes and I believe that is being worked on. But there’s a lot of lies out there propaganda and hate that screw everything up. Hard to make progress when everybody is lying and trying to get their own agenda done
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Jonjdw However, there are facts. The US has a problem no other developed nation has with the number of guns and the number of mass killings. We need action this time. If the deaths of children aren't enough, then what is?

@basilfawlty89 Read the Texas constitution =
"Text of Section 23:
Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime."

@basilfawlty89 Imagine:
@LordShadowfire That’s right. The GOP voted against that bill as well as the one keeping guns out of the hands of people on terrorist watchlists. They had the opportunity not to risk it and decided to go with arming them.
@windinhishair There are alot of countries with plenty of guns. But two things make the US unique. Regulations are a joke and a toxic right wing gun culture that teaches guns are status symbols and symbols of manhood that results in people who think solving interpersonal problems with bullets is acceptable behavior.
