The bottom line as to why we are not helping Ukraine is: The U.S. and NATO are cowards and are afraid to face Russia.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO - imho if it were Putin would never have attacked.
If NATO no weighs in what would happen? All conjecture but. a) NATO is then seen as the rescuer of all nations who are bullied by Russia, or China, or whoever? b) All NATO is then a target for Russia - who knows where that'll end but obviously the Baltic states couldn't resist Russian aggression, Poland and Norway both have land borders with Russian and/or Belarus (who is militarily aligned with Russia in the CSTO). Almost instantly then NATO would be fighting in Ukraine, Poland, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - to start with. That would be a fast route to WW3, 72 hours maximum and I would expect Russia to launch long range attacks on all European nations in NATO.
Sadly - whilst it feels intrinsically the wrong thing - NATO cannot directly intervene as it will so quickly escalate. Putin might be a megalomaniac, possibly psychotic but he isn't mad that's why he's invaded now before Ukraine becomes a NATO or EU member.

@OldBrit Actually if it were a member that likely would have provoked a response too. NATO in Ukraine was always a red line since 1991. The US coup in Kiev in 2014 and pushing the NATO agenda again was the last straw.
