Topping the list of welfare recipients is the great state of Kentucky, where, per capita, the state receives an average of $14,000 more than they pay in taxes! That's for every man, woman, and child, so a family of four benefits to the tune of $56,000!
In 2019, The excess of federal payments to KY (after subtracting all KY federal payments) was $63 billion - about 30% of the state's GDP that same year. In other words, KY's biggest industry, by far, is receiving various forms of federal payments!
Yes, there are 6000 coal miners and 5000 in the distilling industry, but that's all dwarfed by the 250,000 working in health care & social assistance. The social safety net in Kentucky is alive and well, busily netting that $14,000 per capita.
These details come from economist Paul Krugman's 12/14 column.
