Biden screwed the pooch on this one. He refused to listen to his generals. He set an arbitrary date, and had a crazy old coot temper fit when the generals tried to talk some sense into him. He reminded them that HE was their Commander in Chief, and that they had better obey HIS orders or find another job.

Of course, SecDef just smirks when he is asked about it. I think he deliberately decided to let Biden have his way, in an effort to destroy him. This SecDef does NOT like people who were MENTORED by high officials of the KKK.

My guess is, after Trump's tweeted withdrawal dates were ignored by the Pentagon, Biden asked the Pentagon to set up a reasonable withdrawal timeline that he could announce. And Biden announced it and said "make it so" and all hell broke loose. Of course we'll have to wait for an investigation to confirm or deny it, but that's they way guys like Biden work - go thu channels, get buy-in, reach consensus, etc. It was an institutional failure, not any individual failure.

The only interesting thing about Biden's handling of the withdrawal is that he didn't immediately point fingers at the military planners, leak paperwork that covers his butt, etc. I'm not saying that makes Biden a hero; just remarking that he didn't take the easy way out.

Biden didn't handle the withdrawal. He gave the order and let the military make it happen. The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff has admitted they had no idea the Taliban could overrun the country in that brief amount of time.

The only thing I could imagine is completely emptying out the embassy before evacuating the troops, but that could've caused the Afghan army to collapse with our own soldiers still inside, and nobody knew in advance that the Taliban would take over so fast. Everyone likes to do the whole monday morning quarterbacking thing, but the reality is that we were really up shit river, and war is a chaotic thing. May all the US civilians who died in the withdrawal rest in peace.

Oh yeah, it woulda been nice if he didn't drone strike an aid worker and a bunch of children. Just sayin'.
