AOC says we need to abolish all prisons in the United States

Basically adopting something like Finland’s system.

@QuixoticSoul a hybrid of us and norway actually, Norway's prison system is the best in the world for people who are druggies because their philosophy is more therapy rather than life altering punishment for carrying around some weed

@MarmeeMarch Do what the Nordic nations do. Focus on rehabilitation and support systems over raw punishment. Be more aggressive at preventing circumstances that create criminals in the first place, and interdict systems that keep people stuck in the cycle. Route addicts and mentally ill into treatment rather than prison wherever possible.

Punishment and deterrence has limits, and very quickly diminishing returns. Ultimately, the limit is due to people not planning to be caught. Nothing is going to deter you if you’re operating with a mindset that it won’t happen to you. In the Middle East they chop off people’s arms - but people keep stealing.
