I have something i want to share with the folks on SW who are feeling unsure or nervous about getting their COVID vaccine.
It's an episode of the podcast Oh No! Ross and Carrie and it features a woman who has never had a vaccination in her life (and is very nervous about getting the COVID vaccine) and Dr. Paul Offit who is an expert in vaccines and viruses.
Dr. Offit does a great job of explaining what is and is not true about this virus and the associated vaccines without shying away from the mistakes that have been made in the past. I think anyone can get a lot out of it, even if you're not vaccine hesitant.
It's not gene therapy. The vaccine cannot alter your genetic code. For a limited time it instructs your cells to produce spike proteins...and then it stops. It can't penetrate the nucleus, and if it could it wouldn't be able to code and if it could it still wouldn't have enough information.

Yup, it's a medical intervention and that means that some people are going to react badly to it. Just look at those numbers. Even in your own anti-vax sources they're showing odds of vaccine harm are utterly dwarfed by risk from the virus.
It's also rather disingenuous of them to blame the nature of the disease ( i.e. it's ability to enflame the vascular system) on the vaccines themselves. But what can we expect from a platform that insists on calling it the Chinese virus.
You're an anti-vaxxer. Nothing i say will convince you and no medical research will outweigh the fringe elements you cling to. This post is not for you, it's for people who want to do the right thing but are nervous about it.

If you don't want the vaccine, don't have it, but don't stand in the way of people who do want it. I occasionally work with a farmworkers rights group here, and they told me that some anti-vax Nazi fuckhead was trying to disrupt an event where they were vaccinating a bunch of farmworkers. They had to call the police to get rid of the person.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses the more conventional method of weakened or dead viruses. Both methods activate your immune system, training it to neutralize live COVID viruses if you encounter any later. The mRNA method is more effective and is cheaper and easier to produce, so it's likely that other vaccines like MMR and polio will use mRNA technology in the future. mRNA uses the specific viral markers to train your immune system, rather than the virus itself.
There is no such thing as "virus shedding."
