Remember when people said they wanted this country run like a business?

Lmao, why on earth would you ever want that?

Yes I’d like to live in a country that can fire me for inadequate performance which will be constantly monitored and documented at all times. If you feel this is unfair please refer to HR who will both ignore you and trick you into signing away any retaliatory action you could possibly take against the company.

There's a misunderstanding about how how businesses are run in the USA. Unless you work for a union shop, you have zero rights.

It's called "at will employment". This includes the entire tech industry, small, medium, large and colossal, and just about every small to medium size business.

Performance reviews may be conducted in some places, but for they mean absolutely nothing. A manager can call an employee into their office, at any time, and tell them "we no longer need you, leave now. Someone will pack up your personal stuff, and you will be contacted to pick it up".

The standard, as of about a decade ago, is that they will use something, like a 4-6 week settlement, to force you to sign two sets of documents:

1. You will promise not to compete against the company.

2. You promise not to say anything bad about the company or its management. Every violation will cost you an x amount of $s (starts at something like $5K), and a violation is one word, so if you say 10 bad words about the company in a sentence, that $50K. There is no expiration date attached to this clause.

A business is NOT a democracy. This is what those who voted for Trump did not process properly. A country IS a democracy. Ours still is.

@Northwest I know right? It’s almost like all the losers who said this country should be run like a business have never actually had a real job before
Northwest · M
@NoahB Alternately, they also don't understand how government works, and remind of a group of morons, who spend their later afternoons in a bar, musing about what they would do if they were President. One of them became President.
NoahB · 31-35, M
@Northwest nothing wrong with being a moron who fantasizes about being I charge lol I’m one myself. But yeah a lot of these idiots have deluded themselves into thinking they actually work hard and nobody else does.
Could be worse. The government could be a business that can fire its citizens at will.

What's missing in the business anology, though, is that citizens are or should be akin to shareholders, and that the government and it's officers should have a duty to and ultimately be responsible to the shareholders. Even then, its not perfect, of course, and there may be issues with minority shareholders rights, etc, but, just to be clear, you want to be a shareholder and not an employee.

@MistyCee well put.
MethDozer · M
@MistyCee That sounds just like......actual socialism.
@MethDozer lol. Well, yeah, it kind of does.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Those who advocate for that are either completely clueless about how a business operates, or are masochists. There are no third options.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Elessar Or actually there is a third option: they've been brainwashed by the company's advertisements. Or they're employees.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I think people meant the accountability and economic aspect of how business operates. I may be wrong.
@QuixoticSoul The reason why I say it doesn't really apply in practice is because if your company is big enough you can run it into the ground repeatedly and the government will give you free money.

And with so called "golden parachutes" you have bonuses being paid out rewarding failure.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow businesses are def accountable to their shareholders . Businesses must not operate at a loss either . Our govt used to be accountable towards its citizens
For every dollar you give in taxes do you know where it goes?
Can anyone even tell you 12 cents to social security benefits
3 cents to foreign aid
7 cents to defense
Etc..
@AthrillatheHunt Again, that works in theory but as I pointed out that doesn't hold up in practice. Also short term profits often run counter to properly managing a business.

{@noahb] in your initial post remember when people said they want this country run like a business . well on paper people think it may work but in practice you are dealing with other humans and there problems
I remember..... Reagan acted like we all agreed
NoahB · 31-35, M
@Elevatorpitches Reagan is literally the devil to me lol
TexChik · F
When it was, it didnt have to start printing money to cover its bills. Didnt obama do that too? Called it economic easing. Now its just economic suicide
NoahB · 31-35, M
@TexChik you say this like trump didn’t oversee a massive recession and record breaking unemployment numbers
TexChik · F
@NoahB please 🙄
Especially when Enron was under better management. When the guy in charge managed to bankrupt casinos multiple times you don't want him running your business or a country.
MethDozer · M
The people who say that are missing one key aspect. A buisiness is run to male money, so how does a government make money? It isn't by producing any goods or wealth. So it must be through taxes that would amount to state rent seeking.

Want your government ran like it is a buisiness? Hand over buisiness to the government and give up free enterprise completely. Welcome to Soviet marxism. Know who else runs yheir governments like a buisiness? Oh North Korea, China.
