Will the country ever unite again, or are we destined to a divided America and will go the way of the Roman Empire?

I'm not convinced Biden can unite the country, I'm not sure all these executive orders he has signed in the last 2 weeks is helping to unite the country, instead he may be causing the far right to dig in even deeper. Your thoughts?
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
You have a massive problem when 73% of GOP voters believe the election was stolen. Facts won't change their minds... Children in mid tantrum .... You guys have a massive problem!
SW-User
@ozgirl512 Trump's approval rating slid to around 30% in his final week. This indicates a major fallout in GOP.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@SW-User I didn't see that poll, but it seems obvious on how the senate is lining up on impeachment that more are still in his thrall
@ozgirl512 Unless someone is willing to euthanize the children who torture puppies, it's kind of everyone's problem, but just yours or theirs, though.

I think Biden is too far right to unite the US ideologically, but as a democracy, we don't really need to be ideologically united as long as we're politically united and that's unlikely to falter any time soon. There are signs that our democratic institutions have been eroding over the past 20+ years, so it's possible that we'll lose our democracy and that could lead to some kind of insurgency or change of governance, but probably no actual secession except maybe from our overseas territories that harbor WMDs.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Baremine what's far left about Biden? I never recall him advocating putting workers in control of the businesses or nationalising then.

You don't know what far left is.

I don't know if you can unite around the Republican party. Mitch McConnell doesn't want the wealthy to pay any taxes. He even said not to check them for tax fraud but go ahead and check the audit the working class. I do believe that sounds just like class warfare and Mitch hasn't even been bought he is stopping it for himself and his wife and her family. He works for the minority party and no its not the Republican party it's the party of the one percent. He doesn't care about anyone but himself and his wealthy friends if he really has any. He doesn't give a damn about the Democrats or the Republicans he just wants to control things for his own good. And people are stupid enough to think he is out for their own good.

{@independentone ] every thing joe is doing is going against the grain to these right wing nuts but they need to understand what joe is doing is undoing the wrongs and mismanagement of there messiah to achieve the trump pitch make america great again as trump failed miserably
Baremine · 70-79, C
@smiler2012 right now America is going down the path of distraction like rome, greece Babylon.
I hope Biden will continue to give folks who want to work for the benefit of the country in the future opportunities to do so, like the Republicans who are proposing their own Covid relief plan.

At the same time, he needs to keep his eyes on the road ahead and not get bogged down by the past.

He's got a good chance of doing that with a slim majority in both houses.

Honestly, I'd love to pin this on leadership, but if Trumpists resort to violence again and continue to rebel, I think there's not much anyone can do.
@MistyCee Good response, I hope you're right, that the country will benefit from Biden's Presidency. I would like to see Congress stop with the infighting and actually do their job and work for the American people and not their re-election chances only.
@independentone thanks. I hope it happens. A narrow majority in both houses and a centrist old fart whose been around a long time and seen a lot in the White House seems to me like our best chance.

Biden seems to meet like just about the most unlikely dictator and divider you could pick, despite the fact that modern political discourse seems to involve baselessly reversing allegations.
It wouldn't have been so hard to Unite if Trumps stupid ass hadn't done everything he could to destroy American democracy
Nobody00 · F
@ExperienceDLT American
" democracy " as in democratic party 😆
I don't think 1/3 of the country is interested in uniting.

@TwistedSister I disagree, Biden is no socialist, he is center left, but you are correct that the far left progressives have a socialist agenda and are pushing it hard.

@independentone and Biden is a puppet.
Nobody00 · F
Lol Biden and unite in the same sentence. Thats not his purpose
Nobody00 · F
@Brianthesnail not under Harris, Biden signs what he is told
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
@Nobody00 would that it were true
@Nobody00 Some of the executive orders certainly aren't helping to unite anyone in my opinion.
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
Maybe buts its not gonna happen overnight though
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
@independentone people coming together
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@independentone the people should have come together over covid but we had a president who wanted to divide the country for his own personal gain. So sad.
@fddlpej True, when the country divides over a public health issue, looks like we have gone down the rabbit hole.
gurlwatcher22 · 61-69, M
People have been and will continue to come together; the mainstream media can pump out all the hate it wants to, but most of America is blind to that negative message. We may have stumbled a time or two, but we will not fall! JMHO
@gurlwatcher22 I hope you're right, but at the moment, it seems a difficult task.
gurlwatcher22 · 61-69, M
@independentone Agreed, but in the end I think we will soldier through.
The country is torn apart by Fox News.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@quitwhendone fox news has joined the lying main stream media. Pretty far left
@Baremine You're drinking the Kool Aid. 🙄🤦‍♂️
fddlpej · 61-69, M
We will not divide as a country. The south would starve to death without the northern liberal states to feed them.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@fddlpej bullshit. The south is self sufficient
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@Baremine no it is not. Check and see who gets more back from the government than they pay in. I believe that Kentucky gets back almost 1.5 dollars back for every dollar they send in. Mississippi gets back 2 dollars for every dollar they put in. Texas gets back more than they send in it is that way with every southern state. That's why I call the southern states welfare states because they can't make it on their own. Look it up. Yes proof that you can not run the country the way the Republicans want to
Viper · M
From my understanding is generally like an accordion going from extremely divided to extremely United and back and forth. I expect that to keep happening at a slow pace.
I agree, but that's a good thing. The modern GOP can't be worked with, so Democrats should stop trying.
@BohemianBoo The far right and the far left are both extremists, what the country needs is the moderates to take back control and decide policy with a level head.
@independentone Yeah, but the far left has no political power. It's really just the GOP that has become radicalized.
Baremine · 70-79, C
How can you blame Trump for being divisive, Barrock Obama was the most divisive president in the history of the USA.
@Baremine Yes that's why Obama's followers staged an insurrection:)
Obama was only divisive due to being black while president.
The far right is going to dig in regardless. Biden can decisively work on what is needed to fix the things Trump broke (because he sure didn’t waste any time breaking them) and helping people through this pandemic or wait for the GOP to stonewall him. I’m glad he’s not dragging his feet, personally.
so long as the majority of people keep rewarding extreme views, it's gonna be a problem.
@stound I agree, the extremes on both sides have become the problem.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
I think we will come together since the virus made us stay at home and a lot of people got interested in politics and are now seeing the parties for what they are. As long as the Republicons don't get away with blocking people's votes.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@Baremine you really need to quit watching fox news so you might know what you are talking about.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@fddlpej I don't watch Fox news. @fddlpej you are full of crap.

Ever is a long time. The nation will unite. The important question will be How much will be left when they do.😷
Well, Biden is trying to undo 4 years of Trump’s chaos, which is what he promised. If he’d done nothing, he’d be breaking his word to those who voted for him. And the far right was going to fight Biden regardless. They fought the fact that he was legally elected, after all. I don’t see them being willing to work with him, even where it would benefit their constituents. But he has to work for the good of everyone now, even the Trump stragglers.
@bijouxbroussard Trump supporters are too stupid to see that it was Trump that caused so much division to begin with you can't convince Trump supporters of anything they are just a bunch of blinded easily manipulated cult followers

whats there to unite around?
@Elevatorpitches it doesn't seem like there's much, tbh.

Trumpism has pretty much gone way past the Romans and rejected the 10 commandments, the Code of Hammurabi, and the trust that we needed to hunt mammoths together and sleep in the same caves.

Be nice if we all accepted an idea like the golden rule, but that's anathema to transactional Trumpism.

Seems stupid as hell to not give a crap about your reputation or honor, but hey, what do I know?
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
Have you never thought that perhaps united countries is bad for the world ?
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
@independentone he didn’t destroy everything.
He just did what he could
Baremine · 70-79, C
@independentone Congress are one destroying things.
@Baremine Congress hasn't done its job in almost 20 years now
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@independentone yes it could have been a healing time and the people could have worked together and became proud to be an american. Instead what happened was disgusting.

@LvChris Better person? Probably not.

I'm not even able to do myself what I think our leaders should do.

But I'm a realist, and I can't wish 74 million brain dead zombies will suddenly wake up, and seeing as their best thought processes involve accusing others of what they've been accused of, I'm not willing to gamble that Biden won't screw up and I won't be on the losing side next time.

I don't think might makes right, but I recognize that right doesnt make might either and that the good guys don't always win.

There's something to be said for not putting all your chips in on one hand.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@MistyCee he has the Republicans haven't.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@LvChris I am afraid it's going to take awhile now that they are eating their own. Just like Liz Cheney. Although I laughed at that. Cheney voted more with trump than the one who took her place. That's what happens to a Republican who tells the truth. So liz go back to telling lies then the Republicans will welcome you back with open arms.
