Looking for some of the more aged members of SW to weigh in: Has another president in your lifetime generated so much division or worldwide ridicule?

Obviously we always consider the events of our own lifetimes to be the most important or different than those that came before. Whether you support him or revile him, Trump has been the focal point of a division in his country approaching civil war. Or so it seems.

You older folks who have seen a few presidents come and go, has it ever been like this?

The perspective from another Brit ;

Reagan being ridiculed was mostly because he was clearly suffering from the onset of dementia. (Although his 'Star Wars' policy was also the cause of much mirth.)

G.W. was a figure of fun largely because of his 'misspeaks' and his obvious incompetence. What saved him from utter opprobrium was the fact that he was clearly seen as a puppet of more sinister characters from the right-wing ; the neo-cons which comprised such figures as Cheney , Rumsfeld , wolfowitz , Perle and Bremner , and too stupid to realise he was being used by all of them.

In comparison , Trump is in a league of his own. Big League , if you will. Never before has someone so irredeemably stupid and so unfit and unqualified for public office , managed to become POTUS. I still have to pinch myself to be reminded that this cretin is somehow the most powerful man in the world. What this aberration should do , once it's over , is ensure that never again can a populist of his ilk ever be considered a viable candidate for high office.

Of course for that to happen you would have to assume that the Republican Party will learn a lesson from the trouncing that they are about to receive at the ballot box. But when has that ever changed anything for them before ? They have become a minority party who now game the system to achieve power.

So don't be surprised if we soon see support for 'Tucker Carlson 2024' , or even , god forbid , the man himself once again or even his idiot son.

@RodionRomanovitch My mother's best friend Wojtek graffitied an image of Reagan wearing a Darth Vader helmet on a wall in Berlin when they lived there together specifically to ridicule his "Star Wars" program, and it is still there to this day I shit you not, that drawing remains, faded but very visible, on the side of a dumpy ass hotel in downtown Berlin.

I totally agree with that characterization of Dubbya. He was a bit of a joke but kind of a babe in the woods it seemed.
Trump is just a narcissist with sociopathic tendencies and his only talent is in demagoguery.

@BlueMetalChick I'm pretty sure I've come across that image elsewhere. Maybe it became popular after his 'evil empire' speech ?

@RodionRomanovitch That would make perfect sense lol
