Has he clarified his statement? I don't have Twitter, but it seems he could reject them loudly to his millions of followers.

He knows some of those followers are white supremacists and doesn't want to lose them.

It really doesn't matter much if Trump is a racist. The racists think he is and he does nothing to disown that. That is the problem.
