If Trump contests the election and ties it up in court, Pelosi becomes President Pelosi on January 20 until the issue is resolved.
@windinhishair Wouldn't that be a hoot!
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@independentone Could very well happen too!

@windinhishair you sure about this?

I believe an election held up in court could force a contingent election in the House and Senate.

No?

@JoeyFoxx That’s what happens in the event of a tie or a failure of any candidate to receive 270 votes in the Electoral College, where it goes to the House, and each State gets one vote. Trump would win that something like 26-24, assuming no defections. Electors meet in December to cast the Electoral votes in their respective states. Congress convenes on January 6 to certify the votes for President and Vice President. Those votes are separate because originally it was done that way. If there is no winner, this is when the state delegations in the House vote as a bloc for the President, and the Senate for Vice President.

Should the election for President not be decided by noon on January 20, because the results have been contested, the Vice President elect becomes President until the President is determined. If there is no Vice President elect, the Speaker of the House becomes President.

Convoluted, I know.

@windinhishair rules in the Constitution written over 2 centuries ago

@JoeyFoxx Yes, which is why there are still separate elections for president and VP. Originally, the Electoral College winner (assuming a majority) became president, and the second place finisher became vp. So in 2000, for example, Gore would have been Bush’s vote, and McCain and Romney would have been Obama’s vps. And can you imagine Hillary as Trump’s VP?

@windinhishair worth the price of admission
