How can republicans claim to be the party of Abraham Lincoln and defend their “confederate heritage” at the same time?

As I recall, one of Abe Lincoln's favorite tunes was "Dixie". He seemed to have no problem with Confederate heritage after the war.

@Heartlander And the biggest slave trader in the Colonies was a fellow named Eli Yale. Looks like the college is going to be forced to change its name
@Heartlander Did Lincon tell you that?

@lifeistoshort No, that's from hearsay evidence from multiple sources ...

The civil war was fought over the rights of southern states' to exit the union. After the war, those states were readmitted to the union on equal terms as before with former Confederate legislators and military personnel serving as office holders and legislators in the readmitted states. Some former Confederate generals even later served in the US Army.

After the war, many Confederate soldiers and their widows received pensions.
