What is the purpose of Government?

In your opinion, what is the true purpose of government (in democratic/"free" societies)?
Supposed to do the ppl business..
But now they just do as their campaign financiers tell them

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout ikr, wtf? lol. There's like a small handful of (US) politicians who arent bought and paid for and thats about it.
Read the preamble to the US Constitution. It explains the foreseen government's purpose well.

@IstillmissEP The only role of the government is to "protect" us? What does that entail, in your opinion?

Government administers law, which supposedly upholds civilization. They maintain schools so that teachers can provide a minimal education, and provide us with infrastructure such as bridges and roads. They support monetary exchange and determine the value of our currency.

But first and foremost, and IMO the MOST important function of our government is to keep their citizens safe.

to govern people, mandate rules and impose lots of taxes so they can earn more and enjoy their lives from hefty taxes.

It's all well and good to say a government's job is to govern, but what does that really mean to you?
