Rather than sweeping generalisations, would it be possible for you to nominate some measurable parameters which indicate US stasis compared to "developed nations" as a group? I don't mean social justice warrior polemic. Hard facts. Hard statistics.

Oleander · 31-35, F
When education isn't a priority, you are going to get a lot of stupid people, and eventually... these people will be the ones leading the country.

It doesn't make as much $$$ for oil, armaments, and prison company executives.

@Dontbother at least half your point have absolutely nothing to do with a country being more advanced than another one. The tax only appears lower, and your income has to take into account the "rent income" from your home, yes you have to add a fictitious income for ren if you own your home, fuel in Switzerland is $6 a gallon and only $3 a gallon in the USA I'm not sure that the gallons are the same size.
the Swiss wages are higher but so are the prices, but prices and tax are not indicators of how advanced a country is.

Seems as if I'm blocked from replying directly, because someone in the chain has me blocked, but seriously?

fuel in Switzerland is $6 a gallon and only $3 a gallon in the USA I'm not sure that the gallons are the same size.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Northwest Just shows you how insane the imperial system is. His confusion might be coming from the variation in the size of a pint between different countries.
Beautifullyderanged · 41-45, F
Which countries are developing better? I can't think of one that doesn't have it's own issues
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Bluemoon Also - universal healthcare, a functional pension system, 25% immigrant population without too much friction, etc. Switzerland is doing very well on a number of metrics.

But of course, no country is perfect and Switzerland has its own problems.
Bluemoon · 26-30
@QuixoticSoul no one said it’s perfect, but compared to others I think it’s doing great
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M

For old people and white people, the past was more convenient. Their only goals are lower taxes and less immigration. The future demands that we depend on each other and destroy inequality. That's not fun when you've been coasting by for generations.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Holdontothefire Agree to a big extent but its an oversimplification of the story that does an injustice to many good people and will not solve our issues. Promoting this idea as the practically only issue also promotes division and I agree with you that working together will be the way forward.
Holdontothefire · 26-30, M
@REMsleep yeah it's definitely an oversimplification. Just an overview of the main motivators for one side of our political division (though technically the message itself is the other side, like you implied).
So if you're not following everybody else you're backwards? Nothing wrong with moving forward if it's the right way to move. Not sure what you're referring to when you say "moving forward like other developed countries." In which way are other countries moving forward that the US isn't that you believe they should be?
SW-User
@midnightrose Yes. I don’t see why that’s an issue. People view countries such as Pakistan or Sudan as backwards because of xyz. But god forbid if it’s applied to the U.S.

Moving forward such as improving education, healthcare, infrastructure, and eliminating economic inequality rather than spending money to build more prisons and more wars would be a good start in moving forward.

Ending human rights violations that the U.S. is currently doing at the Southern border and Guantanamo bay.

The intermix of church and state in the U.S. is another issue that sets the U.S. back.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Common sense tells you that when you are #1 you have to go back to move forward
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 oh no a brown lady how terrifying 😫
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul It is no wonder your party is going down the tubes if that is your bestest and brightest
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 Parties are for morons 🙄

But I’m not worried about Omar, being terrified of brown women is for you sad sacks.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
It is a certain popular narrative that the US is more backward than many other Western countries while in reality the US has been and continues to lead the way in many areas of science, economics, social thought, conservation and many more. I will not deny our issues at all but often the true American thought leaders in those areas are not celebrated in pop culture. But you still see China sending thousands of academics here every year to copy and steal US tech.
Also you can and will find some backward things happening in almost every country that you can think of. For example in the UK in 2019 there were about 45K reported knife crimes a.k.a. stabbings, slashings or serious attempts at such.
Each country has a unique history, political system, people, and culture that has been shaped over many years and is not the sole fault of any one individual or political party. These things make up the what and why of the current state of each nation.

@fairefoutre Nice fact but,US overall culture is not barbaric so I don't find that relevant.
US society is still considered less barbarous than most of the world's living conditions. I am not normally an apologist for the USA but I believe in fair accurate discussion and not sensationalism.

Because a sizeable proportion of its population harkens back to the days of Jim Crow and white hegemony , as some kind of utopia just waiting to be rediscovered.
If our education were better and critical thinking were promoted, the people would figure out how much we're being lied to and might rebel. The people who run the US know that if the citizens knew how powerful they really are, they wouldn't be able to control them. So the people are intentionally kept dumbed-down and in a state of fear to keep them controlled.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Republicans. They block everything. If it were up to them, women and minorities would not be allowed to vote.
Strictgram · 70-79, C
@Crazywaterspring There's a thought.
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M
In what way is the US backwards?
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M
@SW-User would you like to read what you wrote, think and then fix the stupidity or should I reply to the stupidity.
hints.
one of the best and the best are not the same thing.
Christianity is a religion but not all religions Christian.
in courts you can swear an oath on the bible or affirm on any other religious text, the president can, if they choose to swear an oath on a bible or other religious text.
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M
@LvChris according to the global partnership for education the US in no 2
According to the oecd the US is no 3
Both from 2018 and 2019
The original article that you'veread is by the us business insider, it's flawed and often reused by lazy journalists.

There is a section of Amerifats who believe the nation reached perfection some time ago, but they can’t seem to agree on when. So... paralysis.
Strictgram · 70-79, C
Try making some sense. Exactly what are you talking about?
SW-User
@Strictgram Good job you proved my point.
Strictgram · 70-79, C
@SW-User You have no valid points. I hope it's Bernie against Trump. Which dem pygmy do you support?
SW-User
@Strictgram Ignorance at its best. Plenty of Innocent people are placed in prison serving a life sentence for something they did not do and are released after a decade or so. But lets ignore that fact and place them all as criminals.

I hope so too. America is done with a wannabe mobster like Trump.
