An interesting read on the social psychology of Trump supporters. It’s easy to just dismiss them as stupid, but it’s a lot more complicated.
All five of these tightly interconnected phenomena – authoritarianism, social dominance, prejudice, lack of intergroup contact and relative deprivation – make people vulnerable to an intense sense of threat. Authoritarian leaders have long understood that they can attract followers by enhancing the perception of dangerous threats to the society and offering simple solutions (Mols & Jetten, 2016). Sometimes the threats are real (Hitler with massive Weimar inflation), but often they are imagined (Trump with patently false claims of a declining economy, massive voter fraud, enormously increased crime, and unvetted immigration). With a background of genuine terrorist threats, Mideast conflict, and a recent great recession, even imagined threats seem plausible – especially to citizens who are already easily threatened and who have witnessed rapid change in their localities.
@whowasthatmaskedman I think the most common and dismissive diagnosis of Trumpism is stupidity, but in reality, the root cause is better described as fear. He stokes fear and peddles fear to an already frightened base. Since he’s articulating the things that frighten them most, they are looking at him as some messianic figure to protect them. (Not unlike the Peoples Temple members viewed Jim Jones) It’s almost a hive mentality where if you criticize him, it’s like an attack on the queen bee, which is why I think you get such unhinged and venomous responses from his hardcore base at times. Trumpism will probably be a topic in psychology courses from now until the end of time.
@SW-User You forgot to mention populism. Which is now the new word for White Nationalism. 🙂

The journal talks about prejudice and lack of intergroup contact as key pillars in Trumpism, so it’s implied if not outright stated. It’s pretty clear that the fear he is peddling is largely around this idea of a shrinking white majority. @Zonuss
Still higher than a leftist. Leftist believe in open borders, reparations, Medicare for all even illegals, free college. Some believe in basic income. Leftist believe all this and more will be paid for by just taxing the rich. So tell me about that IQ again.
@GunSmoke9 I know they will do the right thing like the President before Trump. All good here in the South. I live in one of the fastest growing states in the country. We have some very smart and strategic statesmen who live here. So it looks pretty good for us here. Im not someone who is worried about a President taking my guns away either. Like Obama who didn't take yours or anyone elses for that matter. Hows that IQ doing again sir. 🤭
@Adaydreambeliever Don't you leftist ever get tired of calling people you don't even know racist? Seems the only argument leftist like you have is just to call people racist.
@MistyCee If you are using the ones here as your subjects, Yes. Remember: All members here can write and have the internet. That has to eliminate a lot.
A better question is what is the IQ of a liberal who wants open borders so that any terrorist, drug trafficker, gang member, rapist, child molester, murderer, or anyone that wants to do harm to Americans can walk right in? I'd say ZERO.
@Zonuss I didn't say misinformed, I said uninformed which means you don't know shit. 2 different words with 2 different meanings. Your ignorance is showing. I won't have a battle of wits with an unarmed man. Goodbye. 🙋♂️
@Shutup It does say uninformed and we are still 20 steps ahead of you. Still no answer for my Right Wing question. Still deflecting. Still avoiding logic. Still not impressed. Maybe you should work for Fox News. You would fit right in. 🤭
@Zonuss This is the kind of shit they listen too and cheer. Read these words. if you can follow this gibberish. Sounds like a babbling fool...not a president.
@AthrillatheHunt lol getting to you are we? Isn't it the Trump supporters who bang on about snowflakes... perhaps a taste of their own medicine might do them good.
“You Guys” sums up the reason we are in this mess. It’s that us versus them mentality. There is only one political party in America and they play us all for fools by dividing us so that we self identify as dem or rep. I didn’t vote for him though. @anythingoes477 @Zonuss @Zonuss
