President Trump's 4th of July festivities cost Washington, D.C. $1.7 million, bankrupting the city's Emergency Planning and Security Fund, reports the Washington Post.

By the numbers: The fund is "depleted and is estimated to be running a $6 million deficit by Sept. 30," per the Post. Meanwhile, Washington, D.C. has not yet been repaid for more than $7 million in 2017 inauguration costs, local officials told the Post.

This is an issue of Congress dropping the ball on funding.

You also forgot to mention that part of that cost came from policing all the protestors. Are you expecting money from them too?

Take the long view...
We don’t know what the job market will look like in 50 or 100 years. With the way things are slowly changing, more and more jobs will be automated and or off-shored. If the US is going to remain even marginally competitive, the way schools work is going to change.

I get your point, I own property and I expect that good decisions are going to be made at the district level.

As someone who works In the field , I can tell you that budgets are generally razor thin. The resources that many districts have come through grants for technology etc.

Building costs are shared, state /federal. The upkeep is on a local level. Thus a splost vote will come up in elections.

Given my age, I am taking the longer view with the field.
There are too many unknowns about the global economy to sit with our heads in the sand.

Or beating up people who work for 30 years and make 70k a year. The admissions rates to colleges of education are at historic lows. Why? Largely because students in other fields start at 20 to 30k higher than an average starting teacher. The gap only gets uglier with time.

I agree, spend smarter. We aren’t at a place where we have the luxury of time anymore. We are being left on the side of the road by India and China and Russia and others who are making their right moves in AI. We aren’t there.
