Since most illegal immigrants arrive legally by air, how is a wall going to stop them.?

Be fair. Most isn't all. Some maybe even a lot do come across the border. An impregnable wall (if such a thing could be built) would stop a lot of illegal immigrants.

A significantly better wall would stop a significant number of illegal immigrants.

That said most of the illegal immigrants and drugs DO com through the ports of entry.

@JessBalance The trend of illegal crossings at the southern border has already been declining over multiple years. The wall is unnecessary just from that data point alone.
@daisymay Declining and stopped aren't the same thing. How many came across last year? I'd be willing to wager it was still a big number.

@JessBalance Indeed, and yet somehow the declining numbers are happening without an ineffective border wall. Huh.
@daisymay I seems that no one knows how many illegal immigrants came across the US southern border last year.

The contention that the number of is declining seems to be based on the number of APPREHENSIONS made at the border not the number of actual illegal crossings which by their very nature are not documented.

It's far easier to count the number of legal immigrants who overstay their visas.

So you can say there were 303,916 apprehensions at the southern border in 2017 and 396,579 in 2018.

Yes the numbers have actually gone up but let's not quibble since the long term trend is downward.

And of course the more effort the Border Patrol puts in and the more resources they are given the higher the number is going to be.

How many actually got through? Was it 600,000? Was it 6,000? We will never know.

Now the stats say that in 2016 there were 739,478 overstays, compared to 563,204 illegal border crossings.

But the two are quite different. Those 563,204 are people who FAILED in that they were caught.

In fact some will represent multiple failures in that the same person was caught more than once.

Who represents the biggest threat to America?

The overstayers wee all checked to see if the were dangerous when they got their now lapsed visas. Did they become dangerous at midnight on the day their visas expired?

It's far easier to imagine Trumps 'bad hombres' (did he watch too many westerns) among the ranks of the shadowy figures who slip across the border.

Men in sombreros with big mustaches.

Yes that's a stereotype but if hard core criminals are coming to America from Mexico they are more likely to be coming that way than overstaying visas.

I'll share the source of my statistics. They come from the BBC not Fox.

I will leave you with one thought. How many US school shootings have been done by immigrants legal or not?
