@ItsGonnaBeOk In the possession of XX or XY, sure. But the social expectations of them are different. Even in centuries past, if a person more closely resembled something else, they'd be treated that way. A butch woman who does man work would often be treated as a man. You could say there are only 2 sexes, and only 2 genders with a wide range of personalities, but then you have to explain why people of a specific sex can end up being treated like a different gender because of their personality. The line is pretty blurry here, and some people just explain it by expanding the identity category of gender. And other people just don't like that they do that. Little has really changed, everyone's just freaking out about it now because the talking heads told them to.

@NorthernBear Intersex folks are vanishingly few, and aren’t really part of this debate.

@ItsGonnaBeOk Males and Females are a universal fact of humanity. Men and Women are not, turns out that shit is contextual and flexible, varying from culture to culture.

We can do it the simple way with old fashioned heavy handed social conditioning, but it seems we’ve gotten tired of telling people how to live their lives. I don’t think that’s so terrible, really - what someone else wants to do has no bearing on how I live my life.
