I live in an American city. 54% of the population is Hispanic. Nobody here gets offended when someone speaks Spanish.
The thing few remember is, in Europe and some other places in the world, the next country (and language) is as close as the next state (same language) is here.
Americans are not as multilingual as other nationalities. They haven't had to be.

"Some" Americans believe because this is America, we need to speak only English. They do not take into account how much land in the southwest was Mexico, even before it became the United States. Many residents of the United States do not realize how far back some Hispanos/Hispanics go back in the history.

A lot of Americans don't realize that CA, NM, AZ, CO and TX used to be Mexico until 1838 or around then... TX was earlier...
