It's not really about his supporters. Trump admires the likes of Putin and, KJU. He admires absolute power.

His supporters are simply useful idiot, too afraid to admit that they bet on the wrong horse. That would be the rank and file. The elite, are happy because he's making them more powerful. Russia is a side thing, and they're happy he's distracted with it.
