How many School shootings in a year?

Maybe nobody really knows.

The School Shootings That Weren't

How many times per year does a gun go off in an American school?

We should know. But we don't.

This spring the U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, "nearly 240 schools ... reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting." The number is far higher than most other estimates.

But NPR reached out to every one of those schools repeatedly over the course of three months and found that more than two-thirds of these reported incidents never happened. Child Trends, a nonpartisan nonprofit research organization, assisted NPR in analyzing data from the government's Civil Rights Data Collection.

We were able to confirm just 11 reported incidents, either directly with schools or through media reports.

In 161 cases, schools or districts attested that no incident took place or couldn't confirm one. In at least four cases, we found, something did happen, but it didn't meet the government's parameters for a shooting. About a quarter of schools didn't respond to our inquiries.

"When we're talking about such an important and rare event, [this] amount of data error could be very meaningful," says Deborah Temkin, a researcher and program director at Child Trends.

One is far too many

@SW-User Agreed but we still like our facts to be factier.

Some of the discrepancy can be explained by the fact that some, perhaps including the federal government, count the discharging of a gun if one toe is near school property on a Sunday evening and the target was a bird in the sky.

Excellent point. I’m waiting in eager anticipation for @Babylon to announce her proposed solution. @Straylight
@jackjjackson

Not in order if importance but these are factors I think that could help:

1. Access to guns is made stricter, the purchase, ownership and maintenance of firearms to be documented better. There is a difference between arming yourself and having an Arsenal at home

2. Review the changes in guns and assess how a 200 year old amendment can be updated.

3. Limit civilian access to semi-automatic weapons

1 and 3 sound like a good start. @InOtterWords

I think denial of danger comes into play here. If they keep spinning the lie, our school is a safe school, parents will believe them, when in fact there is no safety unless you have armed security guards like the President has. And of course security cost money. Which in most public schools money is scarce. I would home school children. But then there is another problem where 2 income homes come into play, no one there to be with them. So they are sent into a war zone. I don't think the government is dealing with this issue when you are told that is it law that they go to school yet you aren't making sure it is as safe as possible. Just my humble opinion.

The primary reason we don't know how many shootings occur is that there's no standardized definition of such an incident. Further, most issues involving a gun turn out to be between two students, gang activity or someone bringing a gun to school - hardly Columbine stuff.

Funny how a common response here is "one is too many." You'd have thought that were true with Sandy Hook. Or Orlando. Or Texas A&M. But rather than stem the problem we keep adding more guns and ramping up hysteria and fear.

As long as we keep trying to put out fires with gasoline, we're going to keep burning down the place.

I agree with the one is too many answer. The information you cite is alarming. These events either happened or they did not. It should be crucial for governments nationwide to be fully informed on this. Let’s not go down the conspiracy theory road. Let’s find out the facts and find out how this occurred and eliminate the rest of 2018 2019 number to zero.

A discrepancy sure. But not a huge “error” like this. @zigdanontheleftpath

Obviously not enough for it to be a problem. If it was a problem, something would happen to stop it. Politicians aren't overly worried. Nothing to see folks.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
You can’t even make accurate assumptions about yourself so don’t even try to assume about me. Seems to me all politicians are responsible. But the truth doesn’t match your politcal agenda. @HerKing

Wow, we're on common ground! Who wudda thunk!

@HerKing Politicians aren't overly worried.

We should be on xo mon ground on this subject. You wised up and stopped pointing your finger at one groups of politicians. It’s ALL of them. @HerKing
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
It’s sad that folks would use these tragedies to spread political agendas without researching the facts.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Here are two for starters which you should already know

Increased and standardized law enforcement training
Hardening of school security

@WindOfAdolf Didn't have to. It said the very same thing I did.

GL:
Further, one foster parent of one of the recused children mentioned school shooting. That's the origin of the tale.

CNN:
In court filings this week, prosecutors allege:
• One of the rescued children told a foster parent the suspects "trained the child in the use of an assault rifle in preparation for future school shootings."

There are no other details.

Seriously, what part of this is so difficult?

@WindOfAdolf Why does a shooting range mean unequivocally that kids were being trained to shoot? That they were being trained for terrorist acts? That those acts involved school shootings? That's what we call conjecture.

The compound is used by a number - possibly in the hundreds - of people. It wasn't a home for this 'clandestine terrorist cell.' It's been a well known site for a very long time and most of the area residents have ignored it up to now.

They got the guys. They're being held. They can't satisfy the requirements for bail. What is your issue here? Oh, I know... I suspect if these were white nationalist rednecks fighting the feds over land rights they'd be heroes, right?

The border and immigration has nothing to do with this discussion. That's like saying oranges as a fruit may be used for juice, so we should be able to drink the sun, which is also orange. Good critical thinking.

You're the bigoted, openly racist, conspiracy-driven anti-Semite. Who's quite sick in the head again?

I heard this story when it aired on NPR Monday morning. I was surprised at the statistics. The " ... 161 cases ... " refers to the number of school systems that responded and/or returned calls to NPR.

"About a quarter of schools didn't respond to our inquiries."

I would have thought there were more shootings.

I would have thought there were more shootings.

Why?
Byron8by7 · M
@Niburu Eleven just struck me as a low number. It seems as though there have been more than that. I don't keep track.
