Meaning a European or Canadian style model where everyone pays the same. Statistically it costs less and delivers better outcomes for the society as a whole where it has been tried. As suggested by Bernie Sanders.

@LvChris Lol I'll be even more inflammatory and say for Trump supporters and those "types" of republicans you hear the word commie a lot for practically everything, which stops any changes to health care getting passed.

We're still in the cold war according to them, they haven't figured it out yet that it's 2018.

I think single-payer is probably more equitable down the line for the US. At the very least, we should separate medical insurance from employers. Someone's job status should have nothing to do with the medical care they receive.

Logically, it is the best option

Most Americans can't afford medical care. I'd say they better try something different or we're going to keep having problems.

@IstillmissEP You can't afford not to because government isn't involved enough.

I think this question is an over-simplification. So far as I know, all European countries have some combination of state-funded and personally-funded healthcare. In the UK, which obviously I know best, everone is entitled to free (ie taxpayer-funded) healthcare (except that most people have to pay a fixed charge for prescriptions) but there is also a substantial private sector in which people choose to pay for their treatment, usually through health insurance. This works up to a point, but the NHS is under heavy pressure, for various reasons, and it’s at least arguable that overall outcomes would be better if more people were encouraged to pay directly for the services they receive. I have no ideological preference for one system over another. All that matters, it seems to me, is what is likely to produce the best results.

I think the most popular program for America would be a universal baseline of care. Nationalized, but minimalist in nature. Some extra benefit programs administered by states, and room leftover for private insurance options.

That is the Australian model you describe and it works brilliantly by world standards. Funded by a small surcharge in income tax and a smaller second charge for those above a higher income point who choose NOT to carry the extra insurance to "go private"@Xuan12

Government? I think that's socialist / communist society.

@SW-User In Europe, its half the cost for better health outcomes.

@Burnley123 well, here Medicare and Medicaid is government. They cover more than half. It's just that Big Pharma is one greedy mofo, a prescription drug that costs $10 in Germany costs $250 here.

That's because Medicare BY LAW is prohibited from negotiating discounts that Walmart, CVS and big hospital chains get.

Change the law and Medicare would get the discounts for bulk purchases, too.

@IstillmissEP

It's government-funded HEALTH INSURANCE, not "medicine."

@Graylight

My sister-in-law's mom is from Calgary. Her and her older sister have been close friends of mine since high school.

Their mom and the whole family up there love their Canadian health insurance system.
